Undocumented Immigrants Supersede Senior Citizens For Affordable Housing in NYC

In Bay Ridge, there are many seniors citizens who lived, worked and built this community. Some have been waiting years for affordable housing to open in the area, so they can continue to live here (some have been waiting almost a decade).

This week, Mayor de Blasio announced a plan that will allow undocumented immigrants to get on the list for affordable housing. The plan was originally to help people get housing, without showing their credit report. Even this sneaky pol is leaving out the part that undocumented immigrants can apply to the program. (He knows it, but he left it out of the tweet).

When people objected to this plan, Bill de Blasio said, “We are all immigrants.” (That is true). Then he said, “Undocumented immigrants are New Yorkers.  See here, here, here, and here.

But they aren’t. Because that would mean that all tourists from other countries, who visit NYC and stay for a year paying rent in an apartment are New Yorkers.

But they are not citizens – they are still visitors in this country until they have done what’s needed for citizenship. And Seniors in Brooklyn deserve to receive housing.

Senator Andrew Gounardes said that undocumented citizens are here to seek political asylum.  Many countries will provide political asylum, but that doesn’t entitle anyone to public housing.

Would someone seeking political asylum think they had a right to be on an affordable housing list? They are probably just happy to be here. Who is  pushing for them to get affordable housing?  Mayor de Blasio’s staff and representatives.

If I went to another country, like Greece and stayed there, I would not be a citizen of their country.  I would need to go through the immigration process before being able to have access benefits of citizenship in any country.

Elected politicians in our area should be challenging that aspect of de Blasio’s new plan, as Bay Ridge has a large  NORC.

Yet, they are silent.  #Crickets  Why is everyone afraid to challenge Bill de Blasio and his staff, who haven’t thought this plan through. How did this go through without a vote from NYC City Council?

Hugs,
marlene
