Otey’s Desperate Endorsement to Save Marty

While the New York Times and The Daily News endorsed Andrew Gounardes this week.  The Home Reporter named Chuck Otey it’s editor. Otey is Marty’s friend and as the head of the paper, he endorsed Marty.  It just sounds like a desperate attempt to help Golden after the two big papers endorsed Gounardes..

Andrew Gounardes Endorsed by The Daily News

Chuck Otey has been using The Home Reporter to take shots at Andrew Gounardes for awhile. I guess journalist objectivity doesn’t matter to Otey.

Strangely, Dozier Hasty, the owner of all the local papers in Bay Ridge must have thought this was a good idea – wait Hasty doesn’t live here and has only observed Bay Ridge, so he probably doesn’t care.  Just like Dozier doesn’t care that the broken Spectator sign on the Home Reporter’s office is an eyesore in Bay Ridge.

Bay Ridge residents expressed their thoughts about the endorsement – see here and comments here. People here want representation, we don’t care if the editor of the Home Reporter is friends with Marty.

Anyone who attended the festivals in Bay Ridge in October could tell, people have lost interest in Marty Golden.  Why? Because Marty Golden’s interest hasn’t been Bay Ridge for a long time. (See here)

Let’s talk about Otey’s  endorsement…..it began with the title that Golden is Bay Ridge’s native son – YES, SO IS ANDREW GOUNARDES.  Otey’s title purposely implies that Gounardes is not because he doesn’t care if we have the truth. Why couldn’t Otey have written: Marty Golden, He’s Not So Good Anymore, but Vote For Him Anyway Because He’s My Friend.

Maybe Paula Katinas, your political editor knows something about what’s going on. Why hasn’t she written about this?

One of the biggest problems that I have seen with Chuck Otey’s writing is that he writes about Bay Ridge from awhile back. He keeps mentioning the “Pioneers of Bay Ridge” and posting old pictures of him and his friends. I can understand someone doing that once a year, but not regularly. What about TODAY and what’s going on in Bay Ridge TODAY?  Otey talked about how Marty Golden used to be. Here Otey referred to 5th Avenue buzzing with activity:

Fifth Avenue in Bay Ridge is becoming a ghost Avenue as more and more shops continue to close. Remembering how Marty Golden was years ago, doesn’t help anyone.  The rents are too high and small businesses can’t cover $3500 – $4000 a month rents. Golden’s office is on 5th Avenue so he must see what’s going on. Why hasn’t Marty Golden written a tax break to help these shop owners?

Marty Golden was too busy writing nonsense bills for his friends this year. This has been going on for awhile, but Chuck Otey and the paper didn’t want to tell us about it – Bklyner did.   Chuck Otey didn’t want us to know that Marty Golden didn’t stand up for money owed to Bay Ridge schools – Otey’s children are grown and the schools in Bay Ridge are of little interest to him.

Marty Golden stopped caring about Bay Ridge a long time ago – there are no bills for Bay Ridge.

Going forward as the editor of a local paper, Chuck Otey should keep in mind what Arthur Miller said, “A good newspaper, I suppose, is a nation talking to itself.”  Chuck Otey isn’t even able to write about why almost $800,000 has gone to Marty Golden’s family business.   But really c’mon Chuck – the Golden Era is over.
