Omar Vaid Only Fooled the Internet
Omar Vaid ran for election in Bay Ridge. He wanted to unseat Congressman Dan Donovan.
The election results were: Max Rose took 65% of the vote, DeVitto took 20% and Omar had less than 10% of the vote.
Omar lived in Williamsburg and a few months ago said he moved to Bay Ridge.
Vaid convinced people through social media (mainly Twitter) that he was a viable candidate living in our community. Yet, most people in Bay Ridge never heard of Omar. Strangely, Vaid chose not to appear in a voter’s guide to the Democratic candidates put together by the local organization, Fight Back Bay Ridge.
Why didn’t Vaid run in the neighborhood he lived? Vaid wanted to run to be NY’s first Muslim-American representative and there aren’t a lot of Muslims in Williamsburg. Yet, the Muslim Community in Bay Ridge has several women activists who are able to represent the community much better than a carpetbagger. I’ve never seen Vaid supporting any of those activists.
Vaid fooled a lot of people and received many donations. People didn’t do their research and just threw money at his campaign.
