The NYPD Widow Marty Golden Failed to Help
Why didn’t Senator Marty Golden get an attorney to file a lawsuit to stop the release of Herman Bell from prison?
I don’t get it.
Senator Golden could have asked Congressman Dan Donovan (who is an attorney) to assist him in blocking Herman Bell’s parole. I know there are many attorneys who would have eagerly helped write the paperwork to help Mrs. Piagentiti (especially if they heard how her husband was murdered in cold blood). Why did Marty Golden think that a petition or posts on social media would stop the release of a man who had been paroled?
Golden knows petitions are for very low end requests and people don’t take them seriously. When something as serious as a cop-killer being paroled came up, Golden should have filed paperwork to stop it. Fortunately, the Patrolman’s Benevolent Association filed a lawsuit to stop the release of Herman Bell.
Mrs. Piagentiti deserved a better response from Golden.
In 1971, Herman Bell and his buddies (Anthony Bottom and Albert Washington) called 911 and two police officers, Officers Joe Piagentini and Waverly Jones went to investigate building in Harlem (West 159th Street – the Rangel Houses now). The officers were assassinated. Officer Jones was shot once in the head and died instantly, but Officer Piagentini was shot 22 times. Joe Piagentini begged for his life and told Bell he had a wife and children. He was only 27 years.
In 1979, Herman Bell and the other two men were found guilty and sentenced to 25 years to life. After nearly 45 years in prison and being denied parole seven times, Bell was granted parole on Feb. 18, 2018. Bell was expected to leave prison on April 17th.
Diane Piagentiti had to raise two children without their father. Officer Piagentini was murdered in cold blood. Officer Waverly’s death was different and his family is okay with Bell being released.
Maybe Marty Golden was a better representative years ago, but lately he’s been pretty awful. Why didn’t Congressman Donovan offer to help Golden rather than spending his time with a stupid bill to put the president’s picture in post offices?
Hugs,
marlene
