This family series welcomes all in a participatory workshop focusing on the sung Arabic poetry (al muwashahat) of medieval Al Andalus. In each session, Bay Ridge teaching artists, multi-instrumentalist Zafer Tawil, and dancer Nicole Macotsis, will lead participants in identifying the rhythm, singing and understanding lyrics, and dancing basic steps to one of the most commonly known muwashahat in the US: Lamma Bada Yatathanna (When She Began to Sway).
About the Teaching Artists:
Zafer Tawil is a renowned Palestinian musician from Jerusalem, who has mastered oud, violin, and qanun, and the full range of Arab percussion. He has accompanied both Arab music greats such as Simone Shaheen and western pop stars such as Sting; and is also a composer and music educator.
Nicole Macotsis is a folklorist specializing in Arab traditions; she is also a dancer. In partnership with Arab American New Yorkers, she develops public programs such as So You Think You Can Dabkeh and Tarab Together: Sing and Dance bil ‘Arabi. www.instagram.com/
