Storage Wars

I have become completely addicted to A&E’s Storage Wars.  It’s such an odd show and I think that is what makes it so interesting.

There are five main characters in the show who participate in buying storage lockers that people have abandoned.

1) Dave Hester – Dave is portrayed as the bad guy in the show. He owns two shops and uses his storage locker wins to stock the store. His son, Dave Jr. was recently on the show buying a locker. You can tell the kid was raised well and is a good person so the father’s portrayal is just for the show. In later episodes, Dave shows a soft side when he shows his new puppy. This is business for him and he needs the storage lockers to stock his store and pay 15 employees.

In late 2011, Hester brought his new pug puppies on the show. He said one was named Yip and the other was named YUPPPPPPPP,

2) Daryll Sheets – I thought Daryll was a nice guy in the beginning, but recently he’s come off as the jerk. He’s super competitive and he gets a little nasty.  Sheets is known as the gambler because he takes chances with lockers. He doesn’t have a shop, but his house is set up so he can store his winnings before he sells them. I used to like watching him, but now he’s just becoming annoying. His kid Brandon is also at the auctions bidding. Sometimes Brandon is quiet and seems nice, but sometimes he plays along with his father and looks like a jerk. Sheets was married at the beginning of the show, but I don’t know if he still is. Apparently, he and his wife had custody of their granddaughter (not Brandon’s child) and Sheets wants to make sure there is enough money to raise her and pay for her schooling.

3&4) Brandi & Jarrod Schultz – these are the underdogs and everyone loves them. Jared and Brandi have a shop called’ Now and Then Second Hand Store’ located  at 810 N. Tustin Ave. in Orange. and use the storage lockers to fill their store. They don’t usually have a lot of money to use in buying lockers, but they have a good chemistry and are a good couple. A lot of people think Brandi is mean to Jared, but I think Brandi is just a smart business woman and balances Jared Schultz. Recently, Sheets referred to Jarrod and Brandi as newlyweds, but they are not married (as confirmed in the 9/1/11 show). Jarrod and Brandi met when Brandi took a job where  Jarrod worked 12 or 13 years ago. He liked her right away and told his boss that if Brandi was hired, he was going to date her. Brandi said she was not fond of Jarrod in the beginning.   Jandi (Jarrod + Brandi) have two cute children – a boy and a girl. The kids appeared on a show when Brandy and Jarod went to sell amusement park memorabilia.  After they spoke with the park workers, the family went on a few rides. In the June 2012, Jarod had his son, Cameron on the show and called his name several times.

In the Winter of 2012, Brandi is seen on the show buying a locker without Jarrod.  Jorrod and she are expanding their business and he reportedly is working at the store. Brandi spent $2600 on a locker with a safe in it for Jarrod.  She calls Jarrod to ask him to send out their worker, Mark to help her.

4) Barry Weiss – Barry’s the older, kooky dude. He’s a gentleman and usually funny. Barry is looking for unusual items and antiques. Barry has ads on the internet looking for a sidekick or partner.

5) There is also the auctioneer, Dan Dotson and his wife Laura. You don’t really notice the auctioneer and his pleasant wife at first. But once you know that the auctioneer gets a percent of the auction and he also initiates some drama into the auction to drive up the price, he becomes a lot more noticeable. Dan is upfront about loving the bidding wars because it drives up his commissions. Laura Dotson met Dan when she went to bid on restaurant equipment at the auctions. She went for 3 years and then one day Dan said, if you weren’t married I would marry you. She said she wasn’t and they started dating. She loves the auctions and is even an auctioneer alone when Dan is not available.

6) New Minor Characters have been added this past year because the show needs fresh blood. These auction bidders don’t argue as much as they used to because they have sort of become comrades. So the new bidders are:

a) Mark – I thought they were going to make Mark a new character. He was way more annoying than Dave Hester. He swoops into the auctions and bids like crazy until he wins several lockers. The other bidders seem a bit intimidated. Mark wears sunglasses, white pants and shiny shoes. As you might guess he is just a bit annoying on the show.

b) Nabila – Dave Hester said everyone was intimidated by Nabila because apparently she had scored a great locker one time. The locker may have been owned by Paris Hilton and Nabila apparently made millions of dollars from selling the contents.

c) Bill – Bill was a newbie who appeared on one show. Apparently he was between jobs or had decided to give this business a try. He bought a locker that a lot of people wanted. After he won, Jarrod went to talk with him and helped him count up his winnings. He never appeared on another show after that.

Is the show real? It’s a reality show so it can’t be entirely real. But I don’t think it is entirely scripted either. Do they hid things in the lockers for the show? Maybe. But it’s an exciting show to watch none-the-less. Some people say the show is fake because they have auctions to film on days when auctions aren’t scheduled.  Newspapers have written that storage locker auction prices have increased due to the popularity of the show.

In the Fall 2011, Texas Storage Wars is being shown.

I have no intention of buying anyones old junk or storage locker in Brooklyn. I just love watching them win these clown look for their gold.

Hugs,
marlene
