Seven Years Later
Today is the anniversary of 9/11 – a somber day for people in NY and across the US. Terrorists struck the Twin Towers on 9/11/01. I was in school at the time. I was teaching a class when I got a phone call. “The World Trade center has just been hit by a plane and is on fire. You may want to call Karen.” My co-worker knew that my best friend worked in the area. Although she didn’t work in the towers, I called her cell to check if she was okay. I couldn’ t get Karen on the phone for hours. Meanwhile, my principal told the students what happened. I saw the fear on their faces as they began to unders
tand what happened. Terrorists was a word we hadn’t heard in NYC.
The day was spent calling everyone you knew and finding out that some friends/family had not checked in. It felt like a bad dream. That day, we found out that many friends and friends of friends died in the World Trade. Many of my students lost parents.
Hugs,
marlene

Yesterday my 1st grader came home talking about the towers, planes, and terrorist. They had talked about different things throughout the day and he still had many questions. When the news came on he had heard the word Iraq and that triggered more he had learned during the day and started talking about Iraq and Iran. It’s a day I will never forget and a day that will always be honored for those lost in such a tragic way. Take Care :)

My friends who worked there made it out in time. But their friends did not. One friend had a meeting at the restaurant at 9am that day, but is train was late so the says that his ticket wasn’t up yet.
I can’t believe time has flown since that day.

What a beautiful post. 9/11 will be as significant to our generation as Pearl Harbour was to our Parents generation. It will and has defined as a nation, a people, and parents to our children.

it’s so amazing how time has flown for me because I was BLESSED not to lose anyone and yet I imagine—for those whose lives were *closely* touched time has stood still.
so sad.

Thank you for your kind post on my blog. I am so sorry if I miss lead you regarding 9-11. I am a first responder in my state of Kansas. I was not in NY at the time of 9-11. I am sorry if you miss understood my posting. I also know how hard it is for a community to recover from such an event. I pray for all of you and your families.
I have been to the scenes of explosions, tornadoes and other tragic events with our Critical Incident Stress Management Team here in the state of Ks. I have been to Greensburg (tornado) , De Bruce Grain (explosion), Ok City Bombing (explosion).. and so on.
My team is there to help the on site personal deal with these tragic events and the after math of the event. We try to educate the first responders.. on how to deal with the stress that could result from dealing with these tragic events. We hope to save first responders for Post Traumatic Disorders (PTSD) associated with these types of events.

I was also teaching that morning, although I was across the country in Texas. I will never forget the silence, the hearts of kids and adults forever changed, their sense of safety crushed and mangled.
This week, we feel it all over again, even all the way over here in Texas.

Thanks for stopping by. Yes, we do have a wonderful life here in the country, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. We miss Buddy so much but have wonderful memories of the past 16 years with him. He was an amazing horse, not handsome by any stretch but the personality and gentleness that doesn’t come along very often. Yes, I will be posting the pictures of my other horses when we get them.
I remember 9-11 as if it were just yesterday. I was on my way to the stable where we keep one of horses so that I have one to ride there with friends. I had the radio on and they said that an airplane had hit one of the toweers. At that point they thought it was an accident. When I returned home I put the television on and got the full impact of what had happened. I was horrified as was everyone else in this country. I can’t imagine being right there in NYC! May we never forget that sad day in our history!

My job of a CISM team member is a volunteered position. It is a stop gap that was put into place in our Police Dept to help officer’s to deal with tragic events. Officer’s never know what will happen as they come to work daily. What can effect one officer might not bother anyone else. Post Trauma can happen to anyone of us at anytime.
Through education and training our officer’s have a lower rate of Post Trauma Stress having this team in place. They received information to help enlighten them to what will and what could occur after theses events. It has been a proven fact if officer’s received one on one’s or group education (debriefings) officer’s are more likely to go on with their lives without much after effects of these events. We/the team are called out as needed. My last call out that I was involved in was where 2 of our Officer’s received injuries resulting from a crazed man welding a gun.
I believe this is a very good stop gap in helping our officer’s recover from these tragic events and without lasting effects.
Without education or training officer’s sometimes will, develop emotional issues.. for example sometimes officer’s put so much blame on themselves…What could I have done differently, could I have saved them. Sometimes the officer’s will start dangerous behaviors. Like drinking more, missing more work (more sick days), quiting the job, they start taking drugs, higher rates of domestic violence with family (which convicted will set off a whole new set of issues… the officer will loose their jobs if convicted of a DV), more divorces… this sometimes can result in the officer’s taking of their own lives. We as a department are trying to do everything we can to prevent these types of incidents involving our own officer’s.
I am very proud of our agency in their efforts to train and educate our officer’s in these types of matters. We have less after math incidents involving our officer’s.

I remember my nephew drawing pictures after 9/11 of buildings and airplanes. He was 6 then. He obviously knew enough to know what went on but not enough to understand.
