Bensonhurst Said ENOUGH to Violence at Seniors

Rapper, China Mac called people together in Seth Low Park today after an elderly Asian woman was hit and set on fire. He called the event #TheyCantBurnUsAll.

China Mac

Response from politicians in the area was poor – just a few words on social media like it didn’t matter.

IF THEIR GRANDMOTHER WAS SET ON FIRE, WOULD THEY WANT SOME CHEAP WORDS ON SOCIAL MEDIA?   Councilamn Mark Treyger, Senator Andrew Gounardes and Assemblyman Bill Colton didn’t do the right thing here. Someone is set on fire – take some kind of action!

The concerned crowd marched to show the community this is important.

China Mac named the event as #TheyCantBurnUsAll

After the park, they walked to the police precinct. China Mac wants this labeled as a hate crime.  See here

A lot of people spoke in front of the precinct. Some spoke about the incident and Asian racism being normalized.  One man invited people to come up and speak their grievances. Some people spoke about Black Lives Matter because they were born here and have seen racism all of their lives.  The police officers of the 62nd precinct stayed still as the people protested.

As always, I am glad it was a peaceful march. I saw Antifa mention the march on Twitter today and I was like, “oh noooo, not again.”  (See here)

New MTA Elevator on 86th Street

This project was planned years ago, but everything takes times. Marty Golden was Senator when the station was chosen for an elevator.  See here  Old newspapers papers show that Vincent Gentile and Golden sued the MTA for budget cuts that because there wasn’t an accessible train station on the R line.

The MTA is adding 48 more elevators to stations (and then another 22 as well) – see list here.

Bikram Yoga Moved in with the Hitt Factory Due to Covid Closure – Not Hot Yoga

Formerly at 8302 – 5th Avenue. Now they moved in with the Hitt Factory at 7918 – 3rd Avenue.

They are going to be a hot yoga place and they will have ceiling fans.

While they seem upbeat, Covid-19 procedures has destroyed their business. They are currently teaching in the park and online too.

Bay Ridge Stores That Sell Masks – N95

Edit: Graphic is incorrect Surgical masks are 50-60% effective.

Updated: August 16, 2020

In March, they said we didn’t need masks. On April 9th, they said we should all be wearing one!  But the N95/KN95  ones are the only ones that block the coronavirus. Then I saw the image above and it appears that the surgical masks may help (I have no idea because I am not a doctor). Edit: These masks protect only the wearer:     (Why?  The wearer is breathing out of that small box in the front)

N95 – this is the type people need

Find out more about nanofiber filters – both inserts and masks with them built in – that protect against the virus, one is supposedly 99% effective and other inserts are the same, and there’s a felt-based filter mask that has 2 models, one’s 81% and the other’s 95% effective.

1) Staples has boxes of N95’s on the shelf. 10 in a pack.

2) Met Fresh on 3rd Avenue and 96th Street sells the K95 masks at the front of the store. They also have hand sanitizer, alcohol, paper towels and toilet paper. This store has been consistent about restocking and we are grateful they are there.

3) C-Town on 5th Avenue has N95’s at the entrance for $35.

4) Walgreens on 3rd Avenue and 95th Street has face coverings now. There are fabric type masks rather than surgical or K95s.

5) Bridge Pharmacy 8912 3rd Avenue has N95 masks

6) Narrows Pharmacy on 4th Avenue and 100th Street has N95 masks

7) Village Market – 3rd Avenue and Ovington has KN95 masks for $5

8) Deli – 4th Avenue and Bay Ridge Avenue has KN95 masks for $4.00

9) A&V Pharmacy at 8501 4th Avenue has surgical masks – they do not prevent coronavirus.  718-238-1402    Surgical masks 25 for $20 or  KN95 (disposable – not N95 masks)  10 masks for $30

10) Nu Edge pharmacy on 77th and 5th Avenue has surgical masks for $1.50 each

11) Farmacon Pharmacy at 5th Avenue and 80th Street has N95 masks – $10 – consistently stocked

12) Emaan Pharmacy on 5th Avenue and  73rd Street has face masks.  They have the simple blue surgical masks for $2.00       They have a mask with a filter but it’s not N95  – $15.oo

13) Globe Drugstore on 86th st between 4th and 5th Avenues has masks

14)Dll on 5th Avenue and 68th Street has surgical masks – 10 for $16.99

15) Nile Ridge Pharmacy- 6922-4th Avenue.  10 surgical masks for $10.

16) Teba Pharmacy at 7618 – 5th Avenue has 50 surgial masks for $50

17) Navarros Hardware Store on the corner of 3rd Avenue and 93rd Street

18) Bed bath and Beyond in Industry City sells N95s.

Fabric Masks

1) J&A Fabrics Store at 9009 – 5th Avenue has masks (90th Street) for for $5- two cotton layers, but there is not a metal nose strip.

2) Ogo New York makes fabric masks with a filter. OGO is on the corner of 83st and 3rd.

3)  The Lipstick Box at 8815 3rd Avenue in Bay Ridge has blinged out masks. See here. 347-497-7211

Roof Fire at 7901 4th Avenue

There was a fire on the roof of the building at 7901 -4th Avenue.

Thankfully everyone is okay. By the way, the firemen in Bay Ridge are some of the finest firemen around – they arrive in minutes when someone calls them!

Also many residents shared videos of the firemen at work here

Why is There Blue Paint on the Trees on 74th Street in Bay Ridge?

Our neighbors on 74th Street in Bay Ridge painted blue bands on the trees to show support for the police.

They tied blue ribbons before that, but ribbons don’t last. They wanted to show support for the NYPD, while “defund the police” has become many people’s mantra. So these are painted blue ribbons. It was meant as a kind gesture.

They didn’t mean to harm nature, but to boost the morale of some people in our community.
