No One Mentioned the Fort Hamilton Army Base Statues for Three Years Now…

This week, Radiofree Bay Ridge made a video about “Racist Monuments” and street signs named after Confederate soldiers on the Fort Hamilton Army Base.

A history teacher named John spoke to Dan about people who served in the Confederate military in American History.

What happened to RadioFree BR? They used to be a group that was interested in justice. Their videos used to be on the mark, but this one was only watched by 9 people – (8 other people and me).

Three years ago, the issue of the statues came up during the primary election between Khader El Yameem and Justin Brannan.

Since then, no one has said or done anything about the statues or signs on the Army Base. Khader El Yateem’s former campaign manager, Kayla, works in Justin Brannan’s office. If they issue was important, she would have brought it up by now.

The statues (and signs) are just a distraction from the real issue. The real issue involves REAL WORK.

If the statues and street signs on the Fort Hamilton Army Base were an issue, the NYC Public Advocate would have spoken out against them by now! Jumaane Williams and his family lives on the base. Most of Bay Ridge doesn’t see Ft. Hamilton’s statues or signs regularly, but he does!

A few years ago there was a huge discussion about bathrooms and which bathroom transgendered people could use….but the issue wasn’t the bathrooms either! Political people, who weren’t interested in working on equality, made an issue over the bathrooms.

We all know that the art present in a community is chosen by a small group of people – it’s not voted upon and doesn’t necessarily represent the views of the community.

In Bay Ridge, this mural appeared on 85th Street this year. (See here)

Although I can tell you who the four rappers are, most people have only been able to name Biggie Smalls and Tupac. Even teens don’t know the other two. But the artist that painted that mural was inspired by them and whoever commissioned it, must have been inspired by them too.

The real issue is systemic racism, which holds back black and brown children from having the same opportunities. Don’t get wrapped up in the statues or signs because we could pull them all down and it won’t change life for anyone. (And hardly anyone would notice that they were gone!)

Is Avid Hotel Coming to 86th Street?

This site states that Avid Hotel is coming to 640 – 86th Street.

A six-story hotel with 95 rooms …..just what that area doesn’t need.

The permit was filed awhile back (see here). Councilman Brannan said that a hotel was not coming and the site was going to be sold to a car dealership.

This hotel’s location would be across the street from the new middle school that was going in at Nathan’s.

How Many People on the Tour Bus Are Coming to Dyker Heights With Coronavirus?

In Dyker Heights, there is a tradition of families decorating their homes because of their love of Christmas and for their neighbors!

Dyker Heights is a beautiful neighborhood because people take care of their homes….and each other!

Yesterday, Dyker Heights residents couldn’t have more than ten people in their homes yesterday for Thanksgiving due to Governor Cuomo’s statements.

Yet, a tourist could book 15 seats on a tour bus heading into Dyker Heights on December 5th for $825.00. See here

How many people are allowed to be on a tour bus?

How does anyone know who is carrying Covid-19 and who isn’t?

The CDC released the graphic above stating that the COVID-19 incubation period is 14 days!

If tour buses are allowed run, no tourists should be able to get off the bus in Dyker Heights! KEEP IT MOVING and don’t bring COVID-19 to Brooklyn!

NYC is about to enter the orange zone!

Even if Dyker Lights has half the traffic of last year, that will still be a thousands of “extra” people in there area.

Everyone wants to win an election, but actually representing the people isn’t important after they win!

Andrew Gounardes wanted the title of state senator, but he doesn’t want to DO HIS JOB and tell Governor Cuomo to stop Holiday Tour Buses from stopping in residential areas!

Our local NYPD precincts should not be overburdened with having to police these tour buses for violating social distancing rules. The 68th precinct has enough issues to deal with!

NYPD Highway Patrol Unit 2 should have been incorporated into the plan for this year! (PLAN – Where is this year’s plan?) Tour bus companies would not be as eager to run the tours if they knew that the buses will be scrutinized and potentially ticketed.

NYC is busy chasing businesses and ticketing them. Why can’t we have government chasing the tour buses for some $$ and quality of life?

We have seen Dyker Heights be ignored too many times. The area is plagued with illegal conversions, strangers walking around on private property and even drug dealers lately! (79th Street drug house: info here)

We hope Dyker Heights residents are careful in cleaning up after the tourists who leave a mess behind in front of their home. Please use gloves when picking up the cups and garbage.

Piccante Expands in Bay Ridge

I thought I would be sad when 7215- 3rd Avenue, the former Iraqi House’s spot, was rented (Mohammed closed at the height of the pandemic).

Piccante Restaurant expanded to handle take out orders – Piccante at Home! See menu here.

When you need a hot meal, Piccante has great risotto! The prices are fair and the food is consistently good.

I get the risotto with mushrooms. Lee loves sausage, but their sausage risotto comes with leeks. I asked them to put sausage and mushrooms and they had no problem making it like that! Lee loves it because it reminds him of a dish his Mom used to make for his family.

See more photos of their food here.

Dr. David Biro Has a New Book

The BookMark Shoppe shared they have authographed copies of local author, Dr David Biro’s new book, This Magnificent Dapples Sea. (Great title for a book!)

“This Magnificent Dappled Sea”Two strangers—generations and oceans apart—have a chance to save each other in this moving and suspenseful novel about family secrets and the ineffable connections that lead us to one another. In a small Northern Italian village, nine-year-old Luca Taviano catches a stubborn cold and is subsequently diagnosed with leukemia. His only hope for survival is a bone marrow transplant. After an exhaustive search, a match turns up three thousand miles away in the form of a most unlikely donor: Joseph Neiman, a rabbi in Brooklyn, New York, who is suffering from a debilitating crisis of faith. As Luca’s young nurse, Nina Vocelli, risks her career and races against time to help save the spirited redheaded boy, she uncovers terrible secrets from World War II—secrets that reveal how a Catholic child could have Jewish genes. Can inheritance be transcended by accidents of love? That is the question at the heart of This Magnificent Dappled Sea, a novel that challenges the idea of identity and celebrates the ties that bind us together.

Congratulations Dr. Biro!
