December 24, 2020NYC Plays Scrooge to the Homeless on Xmas Eve

Fred Urban, owner of Schnitzel Haus Restaurant in Bay Ridge has been feeding homeless people in our neighborhood this Winter again.

Today, Fred shared these photos on Facebook to show that NYC is throwing out the temporary homes that were built near the highway. (See here)

Why did they wait until Christmas Eve to do that to these people? How are these people being cared for now?

December 24, 2020Tillary Hotel in Downtown Brooklyn Filed for Bankruptcy

The Tillary Hotel in Downtown Brooklyn filed for bankruptcy. (Story here and here)
It’s a gorgeous hotel. (See here) Rates are low. $86 – $114 a night

1. They were in foreclosure, so a bankruptcy proceeding stops the foreclosure from proceeding.
2. This hotel operated as a homeless shelter in May and June.
3. It has 64 apartments which they plan to convert into condominiums if the hotel is allowed to emerge from bankruptcy.
We wonder…is it cheaper to open as a hotel than it is to build condominiums?
5. The Pandemic has really hurt this business. Why have no politicians stopped this foreclosure of this business during the pandemic?

December 23, 2020Senator Gounardes’ Sent a Staffer to the CB 10 Virtual Meeting Who Doesn’t Use Video
Last month, Senator Andrew Gounardes went to the CB 10 Meeting because he was running for office and wanted to pretend he cared.
This month, he sent his staffer Tori and she didn’t even turn on her camera while she spoke. Please send a staffer who can communicate effectively with CB10.
\

This is a videoconference meeting in Zoom, not a phone call.
We know Gounardes’ office has trouble with technology, but they should be able send someone who is able to appear on camera to speak to the community. If not, don’t send anyone to the meeting.

December 22, 2020TJ Maxx on 86th Street in Bay Ridge is Closing

First Century’s closed, now TJ Maxx on 86th Street in Bay Ridge is closing too.
Yes, the store was always a mess, but I always thought that was because Bay Ridge residents were in their shopping for all of the good deals.
Many people thought that TJ Maxx stores everywhere were closing, but that isn’t happening. Century 21 Stores owns the corner property where TJ Maxx is located.
See stores in Bay Ridge that are opening or closing here.

December 22, 2020Learning Tree Coming to 5th Avenue and 89th Street in Bay Ridge – Across from the Post Office

Learning Tree Childcare is coming to 5th Avenue and 89th Street.
On December 21st, Community Board 10 Meeting shared the information about Learning Tree being interested in setting up at 8902 – 5th Avenue at this building:

This building is across the street from the post office.
Since this area was not designed for a childcare location, Community 10 had to vote on it. All but two members from CB 10 voted in favor of the new business.
This location will be for small children under 5 years of age.
The owner of this Learning Tree looked into Universal Pre-K, but it has not been set up here.
