Dyker Heights Fireman Remembered

Fourteen years ago, the Deutsche Bank fire happened at 130 Liberty Street in Manhattan.
Joe Graffagnino, a courageous firefighter from Dyker Heights, ran in the building to save people. He and another fireman were trapped in the building fire and died.
A few years ago, Joe’s Father wrote a book about it. (See here)

The Uniformed Firefighters remember Officer Graffagnino every year – see here. And here as well.

August 18, 2021Lock Your Doors Dyker Heights

Handle surfers (idiots who walk by your car, pull the handle and get in and rob the cob) were on 79th Street between 11th and 12th Avenue yesterday.
They ransacked and stole items in the cars – so make sure to doublecheck that you locked your car door before you head into your house.

August 18, 2021CareCube in Bay Ridge Was Reported to NY Attorney General for Fees for Covid Tests

Regular COVID tests (PCR tests) are supposed to be free in NYC. (On 8/18, President Biden said Covid tests are free)
Some people who went to CareCube for a PCR test on 5th Avenue in Bay Ridge have received a bill for $100.00 months after taking the test. (See article)
People thought they were billed for a rapidtest and called CareCube to report the billing error. They were told they were charged for an office visit and the PCR test. CareCube said people have to pay for a pre-test assessment before giving the swab test.
Now, Leticia James, NY Attorney General will be investigating this.

August 16, 2021Justin Brannan Told People to Go to Home Depot and Buy a Gate for Around the Tree

While most people like trees on Brooklyn streets, they don’t like the large tree pits that are open to dogs walking on the street, like this one on 4th Avenue and 85th Street which has weeds and a dog in it.

NYC used to install iron tree guards on three sides of the tree to stop dogs from entering.

Councilman Brannan wrote on social media: “The Parks Department has some fakakta program where you can request them but you will probably be 95 years old before they actually get around to doing your house SO if you wanna take matters into your own hands, here’s what I did.” (See here)

NYC’s website explains that some elected officials are providing pit guards. (See below or on this NYC site) That’s why people are contacting the Councilman.

Why isn’t Councilman Brannan providing tree guards for Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights?

Fifty thousand dollars left our district and went to NY Law School “to teach people about redistricting.” (Source – Page 100 – 7th Line)

The purpose of the funds:

NY State is in charge of redistricting and they have an office with people hired to teach people about redistricting.
If any politicians were to call an expert in to teach about redistricting, it would be Senator Gounardes or Assembly members Tannousis or Frontus, not Councilman Brannan.
We noticed that the Bay Ridge Democrats had a speaker from the Redistricting Institute at NY Law School teach them about redistricting on May 10th. (See here)

There were many things that $50,000 should have been used for in this community, but money from our community should not have gone to NY Law School.

* If $50,000 leaving our district upsets you, you don’t know about the $608,000 of our district’s money that went to a hospital – See here And last year, a million dollars quietly went towards building renovations at a building not owned by NYC. (See here)
Councilman Brannan shared his tree pit do-it- yourself solution here:

Councilman Brannan’s wants you to go and purchase these gates for $8.00 each from Home Depot and install them yourself. He used eight pieces to make the tree gate above.
**We don’t recommend you follow Brannan’s diy project because if someone gets hurt, falls or dings their car door on this fence, they will blame you. *
*Besides that material isn’t going to last:

If you do put something around your tree, you want to use someone recommended by the city to purchase/install the tree guard so it’s done correctly.
On NYC’s website the cheapest price is $775 – see here. More info here.

City Tree Guards makes very nice ones from recycled products $800 – $1200. (See here – I have never used them, I just saw their site)

* There is a NYC group called Citizens Committee for New York and a block can apply for a grant to improve tree pits. At this page is a link to sign up to be notified when they have grants available.

BIDs sometimes purchase tree guards for all the stores in an area, but the Bay Ridge BID on 5th Avenue didn’t.
Bay Ridge, the last time I wrote about Brannan paying attention to lobbyists, he told me I don’t understand lobbyists. Brannan, Chris McCreight and Jaime K are the ones who told me about lobbyists. If Justin Brannan doesn’t want me to write about lobbyists, then we shouldn’t see bills for lobbyists initiated from Justin Brannan. (See here)
