Corlears Hook Park in NYC Was Destroyed – No Earth Day Celebrations This Year

The cherry trees at Corlears Hook Park in Manhattan, which were in full bloom (above) were turned into dust (below). WHY?

Last year, this “resiliency project” happened as Councilman Justin Brannan was the Chair of NYC Council’s Resiliency and Waterfronts committee.
Manhattan residents contacted Justin Brannan when they requested the report on this project and were given pages that looked like this.

Councilman Brannan didn’t respond to the park activists, so they went to his office to speak to him. See how the activists were treated at Brannan’s office, even though all had masks (See video).

This would be like NYC destroying Shore Road Park – Click here to see what this park looked like before destruction
Activists asked Brannan for a hearing and Brannan said he would put in for it. NYC Speaker, Corey Johnson said Brannan did not apply for the hearing. See video:
The activists tried to save the mature trees for NYC and despite doing everything they could, they weren’t able to because of the red tape of politicians, including ours.
Ironically, Scott Stringer, NYC’s Comptroller at the time, did not sign off on this project, but this didn’t make any politicians do anything to stop this project.

Brannan did not seek answers for the activists and that has stayed with me. We should have seen Councilman Brannan leading on this because he was the Chair for the Committee for this project!
Why is Justin Brannan in office if he isn’t interested in helping people, who wanted to save a park? (Read more about this project here)
Of course, the park is in a low-income area, so no one felt they needed to answer to these people.
The activists eventually got a judge to hear them and he put a stay on the city’s plans. The city ignored the judge and destroyed the park anyway.
Anyone holding a cleanup or doing some superficial Earth Day event today or this weekend AND KNOWS WHAT WENT ON AT THIS PARK is doing the wrong thing.
Earth Day isn’t a one-day event – we need to choose people who care about the environment because the things they do (and don’t do) hurt NYC.

April 21, 2022Robert Carroll Was Silent About Gerrymandering and Then Endorsed Max Rose

Robert Carroll used to be someone people could rely on to be a decent politician.
Yet, Carroll was silent about the severe gerrymandering to make a district that Max Rose could win. Robert Carroll is the cousin to Kevin Peter Carroll who fought for fair districts in Bay Ridge.
Fair districts didn’t mean for Democrats to do the same thing as the Republicans and choose their voters if they matched their party.
In our area, we have been fighting gerrymandering for years when the Republicans went up and down streets picking district lines. Now the Democrats did the same thing.
The Democrats said that the Asian voters would be grouped with those in Chinatown in Manhattan. That’s just ridiculous!
But specifically they plucked the Republicans have been plucked out of the district.

April 20, 2022Gounardes – Gerrymandering is the Same as Legacy Admissions

Andrew Gounardes doesn’t want schools to choose students on legacy admissions.

Gounardes does think it is fair for our area to be super gerrymandered so that more Democratic voters are in his district.
The new district was set up like this and Andrew Gounardes did not speak out against gerrymandering because this provides him an advantage with more liberal voters in this area.

Where are all the people in our community who have spoken out against gerrymandering in the past?
Thankfully, the Women’s League of Voters has spoken out against the maps that Gounardes voted for. (See story)
Notice, like legacy admissions if it is in their favor, they are silent and they didn’t care if it was right or wrong to begin with.
Gounardes spoke out about gerrymandering a lot prior to this.

Here’s when Gounardes said it was wrong because Republicans did it:
