November 28, 2022NYC Council Wants to Take Away a Landlords Ability To Do Background Checks – Justin Brannan is Silent About This Vote on 12/8

NYC Council wants to remove a landlord’s ability to do a background check for future tenants. (See bill)
The bill: Int 0632 will be voted on Thursday, December 8th. (People are against it – See here)
While Councilman Justin Brannan is not a sponsor of this bill, he often votes with this group of City Council representatives.
Brannan has not spoken out against the bill, like Inna Vernikov, the City Council Representative in Brighton Beach, Midwood and Sheepshead Bay. Vernikov took the time to speak out about NYC Council pushing this vote.
What’s on the menu this Thanksgiving? A bill which would prohibit landlords from conducting criminal background checks of potential tenants. Murdered someone? Beat up your girlfriend? Robbed? Stabbed your neighbor? No problem. Come live among us! Tell the @NYCCouncil to vote NO! pic.twitter.com/xgB2ePWprF
— Councilwoman Inna Vernikov (@InnaVernikov) November 24, 2022
Brannan is a terrible council representative. He is more focused on being the head of finance for NYC Council, than sharing important votes with the community. The communication he does share is filled with useless photos of him, rather than important legislation.
NYC Council does not care about the small landlords in Brooklyn. Many landlords live in a two-family home, where they occupy one floor and tenants occupy the other. Landlords need to know who is living in the home with them.
This bill affects 3 family homes and up.
Many people in this community don’t feel that someone who has been incarcerated within the last few years should have the opportunity to get an apartment the same way someone who hasn’t been arrested. Apartments with background checks are doing so not only for the owner of the building, but also for the safety of the other people in the building as well.

November 27, 202268th Precinct’s Kindness Seen in Bay Ridge

Janine, a Bay Ridge resident shared this story today:
I saw something beautiful and needed to share.
I was having breakfast at The Common on 3rd and 94th street. A police car drove past and then parked across the street from the restaurant.
The officer got out of his vehicle and approached a man that appeared to be homeless. They talked for a few minutes. The officer walked back to his vehicle, pulled a piece of clothing out of the trunk and presented the (possibly) homeless man with a coat.
They shook hands…then the gentleman leaned in and hugged the officer.
It was a perfect example of kindness.

November 26, 2022Assemblyman Elect, Brook Krasny Focuses on Police and Security with New Casino in Coney Island

Alec Brook-Krasny, Assemblyman-Elect NYS 46th Assembly District – The ongoing conversation regarding the placement of a casino in Coney Island must be combined with economic development for the entire community. It is not enough to create an entertainment venue; we must include necessary infrastructure support and long-term job opportunities.
As your Assemblyman in 2008, I secured $10 million to replace parts of the Coney Island boardwalk. As your Assemblyman once again, I will finish the job I started over a decade ago and push to have the developer of the proposed casino include funding for the complete revitalization of the Coney Island boardwalk, ferry service (which requires cleaning of the Coney Island waterways), and a dedicated shuttle bus service.
We must also examine the police and security needs created by a casino. This is an opportunity to get funding from the developer to have a paid uniform police detail which will be staffed from the surrounding precincts. This will increase public safety and bring in those most familiar with the neighborhood while not straining taxpayer funds.
As the process continues for bid approval, our voice must be heard by all those in a position to authorize this casino. Potential future developers and proponents of the project must understand that it is in the best interest of every constituent that this process and proposal contain the necessary support to become an economic engine for Coney Island, Brighton Beach, Sea Gate, and all of Brooklyn.
We must also insist on the creation of a trade school to provide skilled labor and good paying jobs that will provide a stable future and necessary support for the casino and surrounding communities. The project must not end when a building is erected, it must be an on-going process to make Coney Island and the surrounding area a year-round destination.
