April 11, 2023Best Chinese Food in Bay Ridge or Nearby in Brooklyn
Here are good Chinese Food Take Out Places in Bay Ridge or Nearby:
1. Red Bowl at 8518 – 3rd Avenue
2. New Ruan’s Restaurant 1955 86th Street – since the pandemic they deliver on Grubhub and their food is always good.
2. Happy Garden 7211 3rd Avenue is good (they also have vegan selections if your family/friends need that)
3. Grand Sichuan House at 8701 – 5th Avenue is good and they have some unique items.
6. Spring Garden on 87th and 5th. Not greasy
7. Fortune Cookie 13 Avenue only does takeout now – not a sit down restaurant anymore – just takeout
9. Dragon China 3rd Avenue between 79th and 80th Street – dumplings
We grew up with fried rice that was brown – not tan or yellow!
Here’s who still makes the brown fried rice the old style way:
1) China New Star 2212 Flatbush Avenue – near Kings Plaza (This is where we go when we want classic Chinese Food)

3) New Ruan’s Restaurant 1955 86th Street (not as classic as it used to be, but they try….it’s okay)
4) Chopstix 790 Nostrand Avenue
Chopstix in Bay Ridge used to make the brown fried rice, but they must have changed their cook or something because we saw a difference in flavor (used to be a place called China Taste). Chopstix does have noodles and sauce for the table which is tasty.

April 10, 2023Pride Flag Burned in Bay Ridge on Saturday

GayRidge shared the pictures above and put a message on Instagram tonight to condemn the burning of a rainbow flag on 3rd Avenue in Bay Ridge on Saturday. (3rd Avenue/73rd Street – here)

I checked the local electeds social media accounts and not one mentioned a burned Pride flag from three days ago.

The person who set the flag on fire doesn’t realize how hurtful it is to the LGBZTQ+ Community.
GayRidge has strengthened the LGBTQI+ community, as well as Bay Ridge. Please send some positive messages to Gay Ridge here and here.

April 10, 2023Councilman Brannan Has Not Helped the Homeless on the R Train

Last Summer, Councilman Brannan took photos at the 95th Street Station as Senator Gounardes was running for re-election.

Every day the homeless travel on the R train and no one helps them.

They are someone’s family members and they can not help themselves.

Elect someone new Bay Ridge, so the homeless men and women riding every day on the R train can receive help.

Councilman Brannan is too busy going being on the news about his bill for selling event tickets. No time to think about the homeless.

On Friday, April 14th, there will be a bankruptcy sale auction for 9201 – 4th Avenue at 11:00 am. The opening bid is: $28,250,000. See information about the sale here.
This is the former location of Pizzeria Unos. Above it are office buildings and medical offices.
The Real Deal shared the (Story here). The building owners took a loan from New York Community Bank.

“In early 2021, New York Community Bank declared the loan in default, accelerated the interest and sold it to Signature Lien Acquisitions, an entity connected to Ziss. The new lender initiated a foreclosure.“
We know Tim Ziss as the developer who scored big on two locations in our area – the school at Nathan’s on 86th Street and the school at 5th Avenue and 88th Street. (Info here)
Whose going to score big at this auction? I bet some developer is salivating over that property and trying to figure out how many condos they could build there.

Johnathan Rose’s developers at 9000 Shore Hill did not receive approval from Community Board 10, so they are appealing to NYC’s BSA (Board of Standards and Appeals).
United Neighbors of Bay Ridge is asking for Bay Ridge’s help. UNBR is composed of people who live in the area – these are not experts or attorneys.
Please write to the BSA to help them AND SHARE THEIR LETTER to other Bay Ridge neighbors so everyone in Bay Ridge knows. (LINK)
I’ll be back later tonight with my letter and my thoughts on this.
Jonathan Rose’s developers presented last Spring – (See here) They said they were going to make changes to their plans.
In November 2022, they returned and showed that they made very little changes to the plans. They also presented parking information that didn’t match the neighborhood. (See here)
