NYC is Not Responding to Homeless in Bay Ridge

It’s August and this man has on a jacket like it’s March. We need leaders who ride the train so they can see what is going on.

Men like this are invisible to politicians.

You don’t see Councilman Justin Brannan or Senator Andrew Gounardes helping these people because they don’t see them. Brannan and Gounardes don’t ride the train.

Gounardes thinks the train is great and he can put congestion pricing on Brooklyn residents because they have the train!

Do You Have Old Barbies To Donate to Children Seeking Asylum with Their Family in NYC?

We saw this fantastic story on the news about Barbara Lakin, who was refurbishing old Barbie dolls to give to little girls who have arrived in NYC.

Barbara washes discarded Barbie dolls that she finds at yard sales or people donate. She fixes their hair and sews new outfits for the dolls.

Then she wraps the dolls in a cellophane bag and puts a hair tie at the top of the bag. The Little Shop of Kindness helps give out the dolls to the children. (Story here)

Barbara Lakin remarked that she wished she could give the girls Barbies that looked like them (most of the dolls she had were blonde).

If you have any Barbie dolls or accessories for the doll that you want to donate, you can send it to this address:

Amazon has Barbies for around $10, so you can still participate if you want to!

Bay Ridge Author: Aisha Abdel Gawad

Aisha Abdel Gawad wrote the book, Between Two Moons.

This story is about an Arab American family in Bay Ridge during the month of Ramadan. She discusses the book in this video.

The main characters are first generation high school graduates that have to deal with their own problems and also problems like surveillance in their community.

It sounds like an interesting book that many young women would enjoy reading!
