RIP Daryl Dawkins

Daryl Dawkins was killed outside of Catch 22 Bar on 3rd Avenue in Brooklyn on Saturday night. (Info) He was only 37-years-old and the father of three children (with one on the way).

Upzoning Requests That CB 10 Received

Tonight Community Board 10 had a committee meeting.

At the end of the CB 10’s Meeting tonight they discussed three properties that wanted to change their zoning.

Hopefully, you aren’t the neighbor of one of these homes and are hearing about it here for the first time.

1) 250 – 86th Street. A private applicant wants to change the zoning to a R6 zone. Several properties including the limestone homes are included in this upzoning. The owner wants to increase the floor ratio zoning because she is using above what is above the zone. This includes the property where the Salvation Army is and the property goes through to 87th Street. (See street-view map on 87th Street)

2) 64 Ovington Avenue There is a home and an empty lot.

3) 9818 Fort Hamilton Parkway – The former site of the Church of the Generals. It will be a huge upzone, but Josephine didn’t have information yet. How did a community that hasn’t been in Bay Ridge for very long secure a six million dollar grant from NYC to build a new building? Justin Brannan gave BRDC six million dollars. (See here) Then it was election season for Brannan. (Don’t believe me? Check the date here) Andrew Gounardes also gave this group money. Why did Gounardes give them our tax dollars when Brannan was already doing so?

Here’s the video where CB 10 talked about these three properties:

9000 Shore Road Update from CB 10 – Bay Ridge

In the Spring of 2022, employees representing Jonathan Rose, spoke at a Community Board 10 Meeting about their planned Shore Hill Expansion at 9000 Shore Road. CB 10 gave input and the employees said they were going to work on the plans.

In 2023, Jonathan Rose’s employees returned to Bay Ridge and spoke at a CB 10 Meeting with many residents present. The employees didn’t change anything in the plans. They claimed that the parking lot spots were not needed and had no more solutions for drainage. Sadly, Councilman Justin Brannan did not speak out against the developer for these residents. Vincent Gentile and other community leaders spoke at the meeting. Many residents were blindsided and found out that homeless seniors would have housing here.

In the Spring of 2023, there was a BSA Meeting. This meeting wasn’t shared with the community or the community would have packed the house. (Info) The BSA ruled that parking spots could be removed from the facility, but they shouldn’t be.

Tonight, Josephine told the Community Board 10 Committee members that the residents living around 9000 Shore Road submitted an Article 78 proceeding to reject the BSA’s approval to removing the parking spaces from the Shore Hills property. Community Board 10 is also submitting notes.

The City of Yes Couldn’t Answer CB 10’s Questions About Accessory Dwellings

Community Board 10 had another meeting with representatives of The City of Yes. The employees weren’t able to answer many questions that CB 10 Members had about Accessory Apartments.

For over a decade, the fire department and local politicians fought against illegal basement apartments in our area for safety reasons.

The City of Yes seems to want to make every neighborhood fit into their program, regardless of the size of the neighborhood and it’s makeup. While some upgrades are needed for the business area of our neighborhood, the changes for residential areas do not sound good. (See new story)

SRO’s (Single room occupancy) housing is part of the City of Yes.

If the City of Yes is supposed to bring more housing to NYC, why are businesses allowed to own in homes?

While they say they want up.to increase housing in an area, this program is encouraging home businesses in homes.

Senator Andrew Gounardes has supported the City of Yes, but has never spoken about it in our community. Gounardes attended the meeting at St. Anselm, but failed to speak to the community. Please elect a person who isn’t afraid to speak out and share information with the community.

Smoke Shop on 86th Street Closed – Deli Coming

At 520 – 86th Street, a smoke shop that sold “disposable vape” opened in September next to Hana Sushi. (See shop here)

Today, we saw an empty storefront at 520 – 86th Street and a sign on the window that said Coming Soon Deli Grill (sorry we didn’t stop for a better pic, but today was the eclipse).

Bay Ridge, I have never been so happy to see any business go out. But unlike Senator Andrew Gounardes, we don’t support smoke shops all over the community.

Bring on the new Deli and Grill!

Years ago, this building was for the law office of Gullo and Associates.

This Restaurant is Getting a Makeover – 86th St.

This building used to be home to Lobo Loco Restaurant at 8530 3rd Avenue. They closed in January.

Now Laila Restaurant, an authentic Syrian Restaurant is setting up. (Info about Laila here)

I don’t miss the colorful storefront at all – this looks nice!
