Peter Abbate & Tori Kelly Are Off the Ballot
In November 2022, Peter Abbate lost the District 49 Assembly seat to Lester Chang. District 49 is part of Dyker Heights and part of Sunset Park.
Peter Abbate hoped to make a comeback this November, but the NY Post has reported that Peter Abbate was BOOTED from the ballot!
The NY Post wrote: “A state judge ruled Friday that many of the 2,260 signatures submitted by Peter Abbate and Democratic District Leaders Victoria Kelly and Jimmy Li were invalid, and booted them from the ballot.” (Source)
US China Press wrote about this (here) I didn’t understand how that many signatures could not be valid, so I asked Errol Louis because he knows NYC elections.
Tori Kelly Burhans is the Chief of Staff at Senator Andrew Gounardes’ office. Gounardes has not commented about the signatures.
Three days later (4/30/24) Gounardes failed to mention election integrity and praised his staffer:

Peter Abbate and Tori Kelly Burhans shouldn’t have been on the ballot since District 49 is the new Asian District in Brooklyn and the community needed new representation.
Pei “Sanny” Xia Chen Liu, the wife of slain NYPD Officer Wenjian Liu wanted to be a district leader. (Source) We should have seen Tori Kelly step aside and support Sanny! Senator Andrew Gounardes and Senator Iwen Chu should have supported Sanny’s candidacy.
Last year, Tori Kelly supported WaiYee Chan for NYC Council to represent Dyker Heights, yet WaiYee lived in Queens!
Andrew Gounardes and Senator Chu also pushed the out-of-district candidate because they are out-of-touch with the community!
Luckily, the community came out and voted against Waiyee Chan.
Tori Kelly’s only job as a District Leader was to bring forward qualified candidates to run for office in the community. Tori Kelly Burhans should have told the community that WaiYee lived in Queens! When Susan Zhuang won the primary, Kelly did not publicly support her.
Congratulations Joyce Xie and Tony Ko – it’s your time! It’s nice that there will be new people representing Brooklyn!
Both Joyce Xie and Tony Ko are parents, so they will careful about selecting and supporting future candidates for the community!

They are both concerned about safety as well!
An armed robbery occurred at the 8th Ave store. I’m here for the community, and I’ve promptly contacted the police for assistance. Kudos to the NYPD for their swift response. ?? Don’t forget to vote for Tony Ko and Joyce Xie on 6/25!

3rd Avenue Cleanup & Benefit for MS Today
There is a cleanup on 3rd Avenue today!
Every year, The Bean Post Pub at 7525 – 5th Avenue has this fundraiser for MS. It starts at 7:00 pm.
Over the years, the Dirty Little Muckers team raised $70,000 for the National MS Society. This has helped develop new treatments and support programs for those battling multiple sclerosis.
The benefit is $20 and includes a t-shirt, bottled Bud or Budlight and one raffle ticket. They have some nice prizes. You can also buy tickets here.

Such Kindness at Christ Church in Bay Ridge
Last week, Christ Church held a yard sale on their grounds. They also advertised that they were going to have a mending station.
Many people have a favorite shirt or item they haven’t worn because it needs to be mended or an adjustment needs to be made. A lot of people don’t have or know how to use a sewing machine. That’s so kind for people to offer to help like this!

Two Cars Were on Fire on 72nd Street – Bay Ridge

Around 6:15 pm, two cars on 72nd Street between 5th and 6th Avenue were on fire. Firefighters put out the fire as many residents watched. (See video)

PS 331 Will Be Named The Wenjian Liu School
PS 331 located on 63rd Street and 13th Avenue will be named The Wenjian Liu School of Civics and Entrepreneurship.
On Thursday, May 2, 2024, NYC Councilmember Susan Zhuang will have a naming ceremony and press conference at 6313 – 13th Avenue at 11:00 am to celebrate!
On December 20, 2014, Detective Wenjian Liu and his partner, Detective Rafael Ramos were killed while on patrol. Liu had been married for two months.
This is the first school to be named after an Asian American in Brooklyn!
This is the school that is on the back of the Angel Guardian Home lot.

On Saturday, April 27th, The Bookmark Shoppe at 8415 – 3rd Avenue is celebrating Independent Bookstore Day.
Authors and Times:
Jan Carr – author of 50 children’s books – 12:00 pm
Katherine Yeske Taylor, author of She’s a Badass: Women in Rock Shaping Feminism – 1:00 pm.
Nancy Krulik 2:00 pm. She wrote over 200 books for children and young adults.
Stephanie Forshee – 2:00 pm. Forshee wrote the Hidden Gems series.
The Bookmark Shoppe will also have LEOKnits at the shop from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm.

Seal at Denyse Wharf in Brooklyn – Exit 2

At 7:30 pm, a seal was seen on the sand at at Denyse Wharf – near Exit 2 on the Belt Parkway. (See video)
Junior shared that the police called the maritime experts in Long Island and they said the seal was fine. It’s nice that people and the NYPD cared enough to check!
*Denyse Wharf always has an old tire on the beach. I’ve never seen the area without one.
Update 4/27/24: The seal stuck around for two days and by today he was gone.

Maggie the Cat Missing After the Fire on 71st St.
An 89-year-old woman’s cat named Maggie is missing after the fire at her home on 71st Street between 20th and 21st Avenue in Brooklyn. (Info here)
Description: Grayish tabby, heavy set. The cat ran out of the house during the fire. The cat is wearing a collar with her name: Maggie. No photo available due to the fire.
