February 10, 2024Is a Bensonhurst Location For a Homeless Shelter Being Secretly Demolished?

Today, Councilwoman Susan Zhuang shared the above disapproved plan printed from the NYC Department of Buildings website. Zhuang contends that a building at 2501 – 86th Street is being secretly demolished to make way for a homeless shelter. (She shared photos here)

Brooklyn, you elected the right representative because today is Lunar New Year and Councilwoman Zhuang took the time to investigate this situation and share it. She’s serious about standing up for her community!
This morning my office and Bill Colton’s office rushed to the site of the city planned homeless shelter at 2501 86th street, which is being secretly demolished without permits and we have proved it is illegal for them to demolitions right now. This is extremely disrespectful to… pic.twitter.com/tqUaXYkAlL
— Susan Zhuang ??? (@susanzhuangnyc) February 10, 2024
If a developer did this today on Lunar New Year and Shabbos, that would be very sneaky! See the video Susan shared here.

Councilwoman Zhuang has collected over 10,000 signatures against the homeless shelter.
The owner of that property filed to demo that building last year.

The property was purchased last February:

On Sunday at 3:00 pm, Councilwoman Zhuang will hold a press hearing outside of 2501 – 86th Street.

February 10, 2024Why Wasn’t Visitation Monastery and Property in Bay Ridge Landmarked?

When the news came that Visitation Academy and the monetary in Bay Ridge were closing, people began to ask why the buildings and wall were not landmarked. The monastery and walls are from 1855.
Property owned by religious organizations are rarely landmarked. Landmarking status can not be forced on a religious organization.
There are only four places in Bay Ridge that people had landmarked:
1. The Gingerbread House at 8200 Narrows Avenue. Landmarked in 1988.

2. 119 – 95th Street: The Bennet-Farrell-Feldmann House was built in 1847 and moved to 95th Street in 1913. It was landmarked in 1999. (See here)
3. The Fort Hamilton Casement Fort at 9275 Fort Hamilton Parkway built in 1825-1831 (Landmarked in March 2012 – see here) (Pictured here)
4. Doctors’ Row-Bay Ridge Parkway Historic District (between 4th and 5th Avenues) The residents on this block applied for landmarking over the 54 row homes that were built from 1906-1913, and it was landmarked in 2019. (See here) In 2022, they added the sign below.

Senator Street is on the National Register District, but this is just honorary and would not stop any building on the street from being taken down (as landmarking would). No one on Senator Street has applied for landmarking like they did on Bay Ridge Parkway.
People asked why Visitation and Fontbonne Hall haven’t been landmarked. Landmarking meetings continue to be virtual in NYC. (See here)

February 9, 2024Fontbonne High School Offered To Be A Middle School For Visitation’s Students

Mr. Rocco Gentile, principal of Fontbonne Hall Academy invited students in grades 6th – 8th grade at Visitation to Fontbonne.
This would allow girls who have been together for years complete middle school together.
Bay Ridge residents thought that St. Pats or Bay Ridge Catholic should take the girls from Visitation. Both of those elementary schools are co-ed, so their parents probably would prefer the all-girls school.
