Volunteer to Prepare Food Tonight in Bay Ridge

Holy Cross Church will be feeding the homeless in Manhattan tonight, Friday May 17th.

If you want to volunteer to help prepare the food, meet in the basement of Holy Cross Church at 8401 Ridge Blvd at 8:00 pm. Those delivering food will leave by 9:30 pm to distribute the food.

They have been doing these Homeless Midnight Runs for several years.

Interested in Being a Firefighter?

On Tuesday, the FDNY launched a new recruitment campaign titled “ALL HEROES WELCOME.”

The filing period for the FDNY Firefighter open competitive exam opens on June 24, 2024. This is the first Firefighter exam offered in seven years.

“The campaign is called ‘All Heroes Welcome’ because we are hoping to attract a pool of applicants that looks like our city: people from all neighborhoods and backgrounds, who share one goal in common: a desire to serve the public and save lives,” said Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh. “

RIP Dimitri Kontoleon

On Wednesday, Dimitri Kontoleon had a heart attack while driving on the Gowanas Expressway near 4:00 pm. (News Story)

He was from Dyker Heights and he was only 51-years-old.

One Piece on 93rd and 3rd Ave Was Raided and Shut Down

One Piece Smoke Shop on 3rd Avenue and 93rd Street was raided yesterday! This is small shop next to the martial arts school on the corner.

John Q. shared photos above which show the Order of Closure from the Sheriff. The Order of Closure shows that there was unlicensed cannabis being sold there.

The Citizen App showed there was a fire at this location at the time …maybe that’s the new word for sheriff!

A few other shops in the area also received a visit from the sheriff including the shop on Fort Hamilton Pkwy & 86th Street.

This is the best deal because it’s $25 for a yearly membership for those 62+  and they have events every day  –  (See Schedule of activities here) They have fitness, cards, crafts, mah jong, bingo, dancing, etc.

• Bay Ridge Corps Senior Club  252 86th Street (this is the location for the Salvation Army). They meet on Tuesdays at 11:30 am. This is the group in May 2023 – see here (you can tell they had a good time!)

• Amico Senior Center at 5901 13th Avenue. 718-972-1558. (Website) During weekdays an average of 200 seniors convene together for nutritious meals, cultural activities and the chance to keep in contact with friends. If you like dancing, this is the place for you. They have lectures, crafts, games, parties, bingo, yoga, Latin dance lessons, belly dancing. ping pong, international folk dance, tai chi, aerobic dancing lessons, karaoke, celebrations, trips, music therapy, sing-a-longs, concerts, social services assistance, supportive counseling and referrals. Some volunteer at the center and answer phones, serve meals and help to maintain the daily functions of the center. AARP Smart Driver Classes. **There is a shortage of housing for seniors. It isn’t right that the city they helped build doesn’t have affordable living for them.

1. Shore Hill Housing 9000 Shore Road  Brooklyn 718-745-4730   558 apartments (325 efficiency apartments and 233 one-bedroom apartments) for residents 62 or older. The person’s income can not to exceed HUD’s limit and must pass other screening criteria per the Tenant Selection. In order to be eligible for an apartment a person must have an active application number on the Waitlist. The waitlist is closed at this time; applications are not being distributed or accepted.

7. Subotnick House – 2164 78th Street, Brooklyn, NY 11214, is a senior citizen apartment building that provides 70 studio or one-bedroom rental units to qualified applicants. SCRIE – SCRIE is a program for tenants who are at least 62 years old and who have a total annual household income of   $29,000 or less and pay more than one-third of the household’s total monthly income for rent. For Con Edison, if you have a permanent disability, there is a discount. To enroll, call and ask for the Special Services application. Fill out the application, attach a copy of your Social Security or Supplemental Security Income award letter and mail it to the Con Edison office for your area.

What’s Going Into TJ Maxx’s Spot on 86th Street in Bay Ridge?

New York Presbyterian has secured the 20,000 feet for medical offices. Update: Now they are adding a fourth floor on the building.

Shoppers in Bay Ridge were sad to see that TJ Maxx would not be returning.

Last Summer, a realty office showed the photo above with New York Presbyterian’s name on the flags over Citibank.

People were excited about it when the pictures were initially released. Now they are disappointed that 86th Street isn’t get a new store to shop in.

Norwegian Day Parade in Bay Ridge – May 19th

On Sunday, May 19th, the Norwegian Day Parade will take place in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. The parade starts at 1:30 pm.

The Norwegian Day Parade steps off on 83rd Street and 3rd Avenue. The parade will continue down 3rd Avenue until 75th Street. Then everyone will turn up 75th Street and walk on 5th Avenue. The parade ends at Leif Ericson Park on 76th Street, where there is a review stand and characters from Frozen.

After the parade and ceremony are over, there is an after party at the Swedish Football Club at 725 – 65th Street (between 7th and 8th Avenues).
