Bay Ridge Iman Goes Negative – We Need Him To Lead and Stay Positive

A video from August 12th shows an iman calling on Allah to liberate Palestine from the occupiers and plunderers. The iman was speaking at the Islamic Society of Bay Ridge on 5th Avenue and 68th Street in Bay Ridge. (NY Post)
It’s sad to see a religious leader like imam Sheikh Muhammad Al-Barr, go negative. He is human and he’s angry that people from his country have been at war for ten months. He’s angry that so many people (and children!) have been killed.
But as a leader, this imam can’t go negative because other people are absorbing that message and it will hurt his community.

Artichoke Bastille Pizzeria Closed in Bay Ridge

Artichoke Bastille Pizzeria on the corner of 4th Avenue and 91st Street has closed.
In the past, the pizzeria closed and then reopened. This time the signs were removed (they are on the sidewalk in the photo above).
Demolition was started inside to get the storefront ready for another business.
If you miss the large slices at Artichoke Bastille’s, you can still enjoy it at one of the three locations in Manhattan – there is one at 111 MacDougal Street.

Filming Black Rabbit in Dyker Heights on Tuesday 8/27
On Tuesday, August 27th, they will be filming Black Rabbit (Code Name: Gary, the Dog) at 1357 – 74th Street from 7:00 am – 11:00 pm). On Monday evening they will probably take the parking spots.
Black Rabbit is a Netflix film with Jason Bateman, Jude Law and Ethan Herschenfeld. (Info here)
Dyker Heights is not star struck, they don’t like when the filming crew takes parking spots in their neighborhood because it takes them a long time to find a parking spot.

Protest for Afterschool Funding in Bay Ridge
The following schools will not have free afterschool in District 20: PS 112, PS 185, PS 247, PS 939, PS / IS 104 and PS / IS 30. (Info)
On Saturday, August 31st at 11:45 am, there is a protest to restore funding to these schools. Please attend if you are able to (especially if you pay a lot of property taxes which is supposed to be funding these programs)!

RIP Nancy Zheng – Only 15 Years Old
The body of 15-year-old Nancy Zheng was found in the water in the New York Harbor this morning near Bush Terminal Piers Park on 1st Avenue and 43rd Street. (Info) No foul play is suspected. (See here)
Nancy’s family reported her missing last night and the paper wrote what the family told the police. (News) An autopsy is being done by the Medical Examiner. (Info)
RIP Nancy. She’s with God now.
Prayers for Nancy’s family and friends, who are hearing the worst news that anyone could hear.

Townhouse 275 – 94th Street – Bay Ridge
Townhouse 275 is the Speakeasy on 94th Street (off 3rd Avenue in Bay Ridge). I never noticed that Townhouse 275 had all the drinks they make on the side of their building.
This is actually here for my friend, who always asks me to name a drink, so she can try different cocktails when she goes out.

Bay Ridge Christian Academy
I saw the above ad on Facebook and wondered, “Is the Bay Ridge Christian Academy in Bay Ridge?”
The answer is no. It’s close to Bay Ridge and looks like a very inviting and supportive environment for a child.
The Bay Ridge Christian Academy is on 7th Avenue and 64th Street. On the school’s website, it says it has been open since 1984! See the street view map – here (School Website here)
This used to be a Christian Center that held services and prayer groups. If you remember where Dunkin Donuts was on 7th Avenue and 64th Street, it was right across the street. It has a sign for world Harvest Community center and the school sign.
We drove by it today because I was expecting to see a huge school as this is a 3K to Grade 8 School. This school has small classes and it looks like there is only about 60 students in the school. (See photos). The children wear uniforms. (Photos)
Sadly, there is a lot of graffiti around this school and throughout Sunset Park.
The mural across the street from the school was destroyed and graffitied. This is how it used to look:

OLPH – The Annex – 6th Ave & 60th Street
Wow! The huge building covered in blue netting is on 60th Street and 6th Avenue. This used to be a small building with a huge parking lot:
In the 80’s this was called “The Annex.” Years later, it was the Diocese of Brooklyn’s hiring office.
Now a huge commercial building is going to be in this location. The picture was covered and not clear, but you can get an idea of what it will look like:
Across the street is OLPH – still open and doing good things.
This is the convent for the high school nuns. Both convents were sold. This is now the Brooklyn Chinese American Association:

2) UPS store on 94th and 3rd Avenue

3) Walgreens Pharmacy – 9408 3rd Avenue

4) Nile Pharmacy on 4th Avenue and 69th Street

5) Duane Reade on 86th Street. It’s very fast here – we had ours done here in 10 minutes

6) Costco – fast and cheap

Where can I renew or get a passport ? The post office. Make an appointment online, fill out the forms and print them. It takes less than three weeks with the post office. $130 total with the photo done at the post office. You can pay $60 more to expedite it.

Dyker post office does pictures and child in-person applications. Quick! 8320 13th Ave, Brooklyn, New York 11228

The main branch at the Brooklyn public library has a passport office. No appointment needed. 10 Grand Army Plaza, Brooklyn, New York 11238

The Midwood post office has the shortest lines. 288 Coney Island Ave, Brooklyn, New York 11230

Cadman Plaza does passports, but there are a lot of people there – long lines.

Sewing Classes in Bay Ridge – Sept to June
Have you wanted to learn how to sew?
Alyson Melhus opened Sew ‘N Fashion at 278 – 87th Street.
She teaches sewing, embroidery classes, fashion illustration to adults and some classes for children too.
Alyson posted the schedule of classes which begin on September 9th and ends on June 28th. (See schedule) She also has will have day camps on many school holidays. (See here)
