October 2, 2024Ayat Restaurant is Opening in Astoria, Queens – Next to a Synogogue

Ayat Restaurant first opened on 3rd Avenue and 85th Street in Bay Ridge. The Palestinian street food cuisine was instantly a hit!
The owners, Ayat and Abdul Elenani opened several Ayat locations in New York City including: Industry City, Ditmas Park, The East Village and Staten Island. On their website, I noticed they even opened an Ayat in Pennsylvania. (Info)

Their newest location will be on Crescent Street in Astoria, Queens. Next door to the restaurant is the Sons of Israel Synagogue. They put this message on the synagogue’s door:

While many people might not think posting a message on a synagogue door would be the best way to communicate with a new neighbor, the message is one of peace.
Abdul Elenani is a straight-shooter – he will do things differently and work for peace. Hopefully, someone from the synagogue (or someone in the area) responds to the message.
Last December, the Ayat Restaurant in Ditmas Park received negative statements online, In January, the Elenani’s held a free Shabbat Dinner for 1,200 people. (Info) They said, āLetās create a space where differences unite us, where conversations flow freely, and where bonds are forged.āĀ
Congratulations to Ayat and Abdul on their new place and may their open communication forge peaceful relations in the community!

October 2, 2024There’s No Money for Afterschool at PS 104, But There’s Money for a Luncheon at Gargiulo’s

When parents don’t have afterschool for their children and children are going home to empty apartments, it’s not a good idea to post your luncheon at Gargiulo’s.
Councilman Brannan knows better than to do this!

October 1, 2024Susan Zhuang Had Graffiti Removed…Thug Put Their Initials Again

Council representative Susan Zhuang had graffiti painted over on 13th Avenue and 61st Street. It’s not the best paint job, but it got right of the graffiti.
Within days someone added their ugly graffiti:

Residents in the area want a mural, but won’t that get graffitied on?

October 1, 2024We Don’t Call Justin Brannan Budget Nostradamus in Bay Ridge

Councilman Justin Brannan claims that people call him “Budget Nostradamus.” I don’t know anyone in Brooklyn who calls Brannan that name.

Most often, Justin Brannan is referred to as lobbyist-loving-politician in Bay Ridge.
Bay Ridge residents were annoyed with Brannan for the corrupt deals that went down on the 86th Street property (formerly Nathan’s) or the other school on 5th Avenue and 88th Street. (Info here)
Councilman Brannan made sneaky legislation. Brannan made a bill to make “a charitable gifts reserve for him and the current, NYC Comptroller, Brad Lander.” (See the bill) Brannan thought you wouldn’t know!

October 1, 2024PS 185’s Afterschool Program Was Restored

Only one school in Bay Ridge had their afterschool funds restored.

Thank you to the wonderful Community Education Council for rallying for PS 185.
It was disappointing to see PS 104 and other schools didn’t have their afterschool funding restored. Senator Andrew Gounardes should have made sure this was restored, as he filed to tell the community or parents in June when he was informed.
