It’s Election Season – Gounardes Delivered a $195,000 to the Arab American Association

It’s election season, so Senator Gounardes brought a $195,000 check to the Arab American Association and took a photograph.

The Arab American Association is a good organization that supports people and helps people to learn English. This is not an organization that has spoken out against hate in our community.

Why are our tax dollars being used to purchase a building for a not-for-profit? How many other not-for-profits will expect a building?

The Arab American Association has received an incredible amount of funding from NYC Council, including for hate crime prevention in our district. (See here)

For six years, Senator Andrew Gounardes has not disclosed where our tax dollars have gone. Former NYS Assemblymember Mathylde Frontus was transparent and published a list to show how she dispersed money.

We asked Senator Gounardes to do the same, but Andrew has refused because he has given money to groups which endorse Democrats.

New Yorkers Against Gun Violence shared a photo of their check from Senator Gounardes. (See here) When 15-year-old Faridun Mavlonov was shot and killed in Brooklyn, New Yorkers Against Gun Violence did not do or say anything!

The Arab American Association must know that NYS defunded afterschool programs in our area. Children are going home to empty apartments instead of being safe and engaged at school because funding was cut. Yet, there is money to purchase a building for a not-for-profit organization?

Senator Gounardes should not have been able to make a donation to the Arab American Association until after afterschool was restored. PS 104 didn’t receive any funds.

Last election season, Justin Brannan was up for election and he gave the Arab American Association a check for $636,000.

Councilman Brannan also gave a six million dollar check to BRCDC last year. (Info here) Strangely, Senator Gounardes funded BRDC last year as well. Why is Gounardes funding organizations that Brannan took care of?

Bay Ridge, your vote in November tells if you support this. Please vote against Andrew Gounardes for playing politics on our community!

The Rainbow Bench Was in Memory of a Teen

This beautiful rainbow bench was painted by in honor of Megan. (Info)

It’s sad that someone brought red spray paint to Shore Road to destroy it because they had nothing better to do. This is the second time this memorial bench has been vandalized in a month.

Don’t worry, the same good people who made the beautiful bench will be back to restore it. A hater isn’t going to hold them back!

Update: A person left a comment that there is a product that makes it easier to clean the graffiti off of paint. (See here)

WARNING: Dog Owners Be Careful on 84th Street Between 4th to 6th Ave. – Dead Squirrels

John shared that he has seen five dead squirrels in the past two days on 84th Street between 4th and 5th Avenue and also between 5th and 6th Avenues. The squirrels were not hit by cars or ravaged by other animals – they were just dead.

Someone must have put out poison in the area (maybe for rats). Be careful while walking your dogs.

Thanks John C. for caring and giving a heads up!

Reaching Out Community Services is Closing Hopefully, Moving to New Place on 18th Ave.

Reaching Out Community Services announced that it will be closing the New Utrecht food pantry by November.

This pantry received less funding.

Tom Neve, the head of Reaching Out wants to open on 18th Avenue, but needs help. Make a donation to Reaching Out.

Reaching Out Community Services has been open for seventeen years in Brooklyn. Currently, RCS serves 13,000 families. During the pandemic, they served even more! If you want to see a well run organization, stand outside RCS and see how people are served.

After redistricting, this area in Brooklyn, where Reaching Out Food Pantry is located is represented by NYC Council Representative, Alexa Aviles.

I don’t think Aviles understood how many people will be affected by not funding this organization.

Councilman Justin Brannan funded this organization in 2024, but did not put anything towards it for 2025. (See here) Families from different zip codes use this pantry as it is open Monday to Friday 10:00 am – 5:00 pm, while other pantries are open one day a week for a few hours.

Reaching Out Community Services should not be in this position. NYC politicians should have offered to help Neve move to 18th Avenue to make sure this organization continues its good work of helping Brooklynites in need.
