NPS Should Save Aviator – It’s a Well-Loved Site

https://brooklyneagle.com/articles/2025/03/25/malliotakis-imperative-to-prevent-closure-of-aviation-sports-center

Aviator Sports announced it was closing. This is a well-loved center and I am surprised people are not trying to save it. Aviator shared this letter:

Dear Aviator Community,

It is with deep regret that we must inform you that the indoor facility at Aviator Sports and Events Center, which we have operated on behalf of the National Park Service (NPS) since 2008, will be closing on April 14th, when our current contract with the NPS expires. Our hockey, gymnastics, volleyball and other indoor programs will be discontinued on that date.

Since taking on this project, we have together navigated immense challenges—economic downturns, Hurricane Sandy, government shutdowns, COVID-19, and a migrant camp outside our front door. Through it all, we remained committed to providing a top-tier facility for athletes, families, and the broader community and you all responded in kind and made it possible.

While the indoor facility will close, we recognize the importance of our outdoor activities — golf, the Green Meadows Farm, and rental of outdoor playing fields — to the many people who rely on them. For that reason, we are currently discussing with the NPS an arrangement that we hope will enable us to keep the outdoor facilities open through the fall of 2025 to ensure scheduled games and programs can continue as planned.

In January 2025, the NPS issued a competitive solicitation (Requests for Proposals) for ongoing use of the facilities to find our successor and we understand that the process will unfold in the coming months. Please email any questions to [email protected].

We want to thank each and every one of you—our athletes, families, staff, and supporters—for making Aviator more than just a sports facility. You made it a home for countless memories, friendships, and achievements.

Sincerely,

Aviator Management

And Aviator shared this the following day:

Signs on Colonial Road Homes 76th/75th Streets

Several of you asked if I knew what happened on Colonial Road between 76th and 77th Streets.

Houses on one side of Colonial Road have Vacate signs on them.

These are partial vacate orders for the backyards of these homes. The problem is marked resolved on the Dept of Buildings.

The home at 122- 76th Street had a shed which was “structurally compromised.”

The news and politicians would have been yacking now if there was a serious issue, right? This is a secret for some reason.
