Pollution in Brooklyn

This summer, like most summers, the air quality index has been high (more than double than what is considered normal). The air quality index goes up when there are more pollutants and ozone in the air.

You can view the Air Quality Index daily here and get an idea of how polluted Brooklyn and the rest of NYC is.

I’d love to get an air quality report from Owl’s Head Park across from where the Bay Ridge Owl’s Head wastewater plant is located.

Lisabeth Fryer – Argued Poorly

Jose Baez and Cheney Mason sent Florida rookie attorney, Lisabeth Fryer up to bat today to argue that Casey made all four false statements on the same day, and counting them separately should be considered double jeopardy. Fryer was the young, brunette attorney that sat at Casey’s table during some of the trial and argued during the sentencing.

I think Lisabeth Fryer was looking for her own fame. She knows  that these were four separate lies which caused law enforcement to go on a wild goose chase for months.

I’m glad Judge Perry didn’t accept Fryer’s statements. Casey Anthony was sentenced to the maximum time – 4 years in jail plus $4000. I think she very inexperienced and she seemed very shaky in her presentation. This site list her being admitted in April 2011 and  its odd that this website found her to have the same address as J. Cheney Mason. Cheney is a seasoned attorney and knew that the double jeopardy defense was not going to fly. If he is a relative of hers, why did he set her up to fail on her first big case?

What Happens Next for Casey Anthony? Karma.

The jury ruled that she was innocent and many people are in disbelief.

Although the jury ruled that Casey was innocent, that doesn’t mean Casey didn’t have anything to do with Caylee’s death. People know the truth. Casey knows the truth, her parents and brother  know the truth. A little girl lost her life while she was with people she trusted. Then her body was disposed of in a garbage bag in the woods. Casey lied and continued lying about it for years. Even the man who found her body, Roy Kronk became a victim of Casey’s lies.

Casey will have to live her whole life knowing her truth. She’ll spend the next years of her life not being trust by anyone. Not only is she responsible for Caylee’s death, but she’s responsible for destroying her parents and brother’s lives these past few years.

We’ve all watched “innocent”  people of society. The famous OJ Simpson, Amy’s Fisher’s Joey Buttafuco and the preppy killer, Robert Chambers. They get a slap on the wrist and everyone, even them thinks they are free. And maybe they are for a few years. But people who are morally bankrupt usually can’t help themselves and they wind up in jail for other types of crimes years later. Karma catches up with everyone eventually.

Book and movie deals may come. But does anyone want to hear from Casey now after she has lied for years? I don’t. I hope we don’t hear her name any more.

What’s next for Cindy and George Anthony? I wish her parents George and Cindy peace as they try to put their lives back together. I feel sorry for both George Anthony and Lee Anthony.

Pottery Barn Friends and Family 2011

When is Pottery Barns Friends and Family Event?

Every year, Pottery Barn holds its best sale of the year – the F&F weekend sale. Pottery Barn’s Friends and Family Sale is always held on the second weekend of October so mark your calendars for October 13th and October 16th. (Thanks Jeni) It’s 20% off everything that is in stock in their store. Online orders are not valid because there is no coupon code for the sale. This sale also doesn’t include many larger pieces of furniture that are not stocked in their stores.

In 2009, I shopped in Pottery Barn two weeks before and they provided me with a postcard announcing the Friends and Family sale. I purchased something small and I remember being so excited to be invited for the sale.

In 2010, we furnished half of our home with Pottery Barn items and we were not invited or notified of the sale. I called the store and told them I didn’t receive the card.

So what are we buying at this year’s PB Friends and Family sale? The Hudson Chifforobe currently has my eye.

BTW, if you have a mover’s coupon for 10 off, you can not use it with the 20% OFF Pottery Barn Friends and Family deal. *To get a mover’s coupon, you change your address with the post office.

There is one other way to get a 10% off code, you can make a registry at PB and after the date of your event has passed, you get a 10% discount off of the remaining items.

The Feast of St. Rosalia or better known by Brooklynites as the 18th Avenue Feast will NOT take place from August 25th to September 4th. It’s on 18th Avenue from 68th to 75th Street in Bensonhurst. St. Rosalia is the patron saint of Palermo

This street festival takes place every night between 8/25/11 and 9/4/11 from 6PM- 11:00 PM

Festa di Santa Rosalia is always celebrated starting the last Thursday of August until the first Sunday night in September. During the weeknights the festival isn’t loud and crazy (see here). The best nights to go are either Friday or Saturday night of either weekend. Everyone shows up on those days around 8:30 and it’s absolutely crazy by 9:00 pm. Even the radio stations come out on the busy weekends to be part of the action.

Last year, 72nd Street and 18th Avenue was the best place to be because of the great live music and djs (Pulse 87) too. Angelo Venuto was on 75th Street on the last Friday night and he was fantastic.  Last year was the first time I saw the Venuto Girls (Concetta and Maria) The schedule for this year isn’t out yet, but you can see last year’s here.  I love how everyone still comes back to meet up and celebrate together. A friend of mine who used to live in Brooklyn and recently moved to Florida just told me he is coming back for the 18th Avenue Feast.

Every July and August, people keep asking me, “When is the 18th Avenue Italian Festival in Brooklyn?” or When is the Feast of Saint Rosalie on 18th Avenue happening in August or September? When I run into former Brooklynites who have relocated to Staten Island or NJ they will always say “When is the Feast in Brooklyn?”

This is the best Italian Feast in Brooklyn. Many people come for the festival atmosphere and great food – sausage and peppers, calzones, zeppoles,  cannoli’s and fried oreos. Everyone loves sausage and peppers from Lucy’s!  There are rides, games and a lot of entertainment. Although the Jersey Shore cast will not be there, it will definitely feel like it with so many guidos around!

The feast is run by the Society Santa Rosalia located at 72nd and 18th Avenue and the Merchants of 18th Avenue.

Someone told me that this feast used to go further like to 80th Street, but I don’t remember that for as long as I have been going to it.

I received a few e-mails asking:

*Is the 18th Avenue Feast cancelled?

– A street fair permit was obtained for this feast.

– Angelo Venuto doesn’t have it on his site yet, but he’s not booked then either.

– The Feast of St. Rosalie has been going on for 30+ years, why would it be canceled? If I get any news about this, I will post it here. Borough President, Marty Markowitz has the same dates on his summer newsletter (see here: page one on the left)

BTW,  The San Gennaro Festival in Manhattan is from September 15th to the 25th this year.

Fireworks in Brooklyn

UPDATE FOR 2015 CLICK HERE

The Macy’s Fireworks show on the Hudson is not easy to see from Brooklyn. Every year, people flock to the  The best 69th Street Pier to get a view of the amazing show down the river. You have to be on the pier at the end so you can look down and see a view. Get there early so you get to see the fireworks action. The Macys Fireworks Show starts at 9:30 pm and last almost until 10:00 pm. If you get to the 69th Street Pier late, you will get to see crowds of people sitting on the pier while you stand and watch the disappointing fireworks display from NJ.

The Promenade in Brooklyn Heights doesn’t offer a good view of the fireworks show because buildings block the view.

I’ve heard that Transmitter Park in Greenpoint (Greenpoint Avenue and West Street – Brooklyn 11222 – see below map)and the East River State Park (90 Kent Avenue, Brooklyn, New York) are also good places to see the fireworks from Brooklyn.

In Bay Ridge on July 4thm there is the Greater Bay Ridge 4th of July picnic from 11:00 am to 9:00 pk at 82nd and Shore Road. There are a lot of free events for the kids including baseball, face painting , rides and of course music. They sell hotdogs, drinks and ice cream, but most people bring their own. I am told that over 2000 people were there.

On Saturday night, there will be fireworks and a concert by Ne-Yo at 9:45 pm at a barge near Fort Hamilton Army base. I guess you will be able to see signs for it at the park near the base.

Nathans Hot Dog Eating Contest

Every July 4th in Brooklyn since 1916, the original Nathan’s in Coney Island holds a hot dog eating contest. The contestants each both the hotdog and the bun. It’s quite unusual to watch them stuff their face with hotdogs and it gets gross towards the end as many throw up. So why do people put themselves through this? The winners gets $20,000.

Nathan’s starts the music and people start gathering around 10:00 am. At 11:30 is the women’s contest. At 12:00 is the men’s hot dog eating contest.

Usually the top competitors eat around 25-30 hotdogs in 10 minutes. Super competitors eat around 50, but Joey Chestnut holds the title and ate 68 hotdogs in 10 minutes. Joey Chestnut has won five years in a row and hopes this to be his fifth win.

Registration for this contest took place back in March. This year there is going to be a men’s and women’s division (the winner of each will get $20,000).

Location:

Nathan’s Famous Restaurant
1310 Surf Avenue at Stillwell Avenue
Coney Island, Brooklyn

Matthew Bartlett Doesn’t Like Shennanigans

The 28 year old spectator that gave the prosecuting attorney the finger at the Casey Anthony trial doesn’t like “oil shennanigans” and he wants a clean future!

Judge Perry was upset with Matt Bartlett’s Shennanigans today and sentenced him to six days in jail.

Giving the Finger Cost 6 Nights in Jail & $630

Matthew Bartlett Florida Finger PokerI have been watching the Casey Anthony trial while I am getting things done around the house and in the yard. Today, Matthew Bartlett gave the finger very sneakily to the prosecutor, Jeff Ashton. Video and photographs showed Bartlett rubbing his nose and then holding up his middle finger.  Apparently, Bartlett is a supporter of Casey Anthony.

Matthew Bartlett is 28 years old. TWENTY-EIGHT YEARS OLD! Judge Perry asked him if he saw the sign that urges citizens in the room to not act up. Bartlett wasn’t the tough guy any more. Bartlett just stood there and stuttered through his answer, “I’m truly sorry for doing this. This is something stupid. I’m not sure why I even did it.

Matthew Bartlett works as a waiter at TGI Friday’s restaurant in Florida. Judy Perry sentenced him to six nights in jail, $400 find and $230 court fees.  It was probably the best part of the case.

Bartlett is going to appeal his case.

I saw this YouTube video of the finger star promoting being green!

Feeling Sorry for Casey Anthony

When I started watching the Casey Anthony trial, I was upset. How could anyone kill sweet Caylee Anthony?  After hearing all the absurd lies coming out in this case, I feel sorry for Casey Anthony. She had to be insane. No one in their right mind would kill a sweet little girl.

I know she murdered her own child and it’s weird to feel sorry for a murderer, but there is just too much to this whole family’s story.

Update: I don’t think Casey should have been let off so easily because now she thinks everyone believes her lies. Karma will get her just like it got some other characters OJ Simpson, Robert Chambers and Joey Buttafuco.
