Mirrors of Life

We went antiquing (yes it’s a word) in Nyack. Lee picked out this mirror and although it needs some work, I think it is gorgeous and I can’t wait to hang it.  We also picked up some iron hooks for a project we are working on together.

*For my memory: When Lee found the mirror, he held it up and said, “I bet you love this already!” I turned around and saw him standing there with this rustic mirror and a big smile…..And to God I am so grateful -for him – this moment – this life. * I include the sappiness because when I go back and read it I want to remember this.

Two Books

The summer is all about reading. On the last day of school, I went home and found a friend left me this book:

And I was so touched for many reasons. The book is out of print, but a friend hunted me down a copy. It was originally published in the 1960’s and I never had a chance to see it.  My friend noted the similarity between the red dog on the cover and my girl, Trallie.

And the second book is one I couldn’t wait to read. The author, Pete Wilson is always inspiring. He wrote the book, Plan B first and this is his second book.

I’m midway through and already inspired.

What are you reading this summer?

I Passed!

I took my test this morning and passed – I’m a pilot!!!!!!   I will have a PPL – private pilot licence and I can fly private planes. My goal is to fly us to Martha’s Vineyard.

I have 78 hours of flying experience (40 were needed to take the test). The picture above was taken before when Lee went to watch me fly – yes, he trusts me with his life (that and he trusts the instructor).

For the past couple of weeks I have been working on Instrument Rating and will be take the written exam for it at the end of the month. Hopefully, I can schedule a check ride (practical part) at the end of next month or in September.

Amazing day – celebration this weekend. :)

Where can I see fireworks in Brooklyn on the 4th of July 2012?

2016 Updated Fourth of July Fireworks in Brooklyn HERE

All week long people have been asking me where they can see fireworks in Brooklyn on July 4th.

1) Since the Macy’s Fireworks show changed to the Hudson, it can’t be seen easily from South Brooklyn. Brooklyn peeps  flock to the 69th Street Pier to get a view of the  show down the river, but you have to be early to be on the pier (it fills up very fast) .  Many places along the coast in Brooklyn, like the Brooklyn Heights Promenade aren’t good spots to see the fireworks because the buildings block the view.

So go North to see Fireworks in Brooklyn:

  • The East River Park in Williamsburg (90 Kent Avenue) – great view – we went here and the view is great! (Yes I live closer to the 69th pier, but I knew that by 7 or 7:30 that pier is filled so we went to the Kent Ave Pier.
  • Louis Valentino, Jr. Park and Pier in Red Hook (Coffey St & Ferris St 11231)
  • Transmitter Park in Greenpoint (Greenpoint Avenue and West Street – Brooklyn 11222 ) – our friends went here last year and had gorgeous pictures
  • Grand Ferry Park in Williamsburg (a very small park on Grand St. and River St. 11211)

2) Coney Island will have fireworks on July 4, 2012. After the Cyclones game (which starts at 6pm), they have fireworks at sun down. Every Friday night after a game they have been having fireworks at 9:30 so it will be around that time (maybe 10 or  15 minutes earlier).  Brooklynites love to gather on the boardwalk to see the fireworks and although its not as big as a show as Macys, it is a great alternative because it is just Brooklyn traffic.

Coney Islands tweets can be seen here and they will share more info about the fireworks show on the 3rd and 4th. You can also see the Coney Island Fun Guide FB page here.

**Bay Ridge does have an all day July 4th Picnic on Shore Road. See here for more details.

I love the 4th of July

I have always loved the 4th of July. So go decorate, dress in red, white and blue and make some festive fixings.

Make this red, white and blue drink for the kids. You use cranberry juice, Blue Gatorade Frost and Diet 7-Up. Plus you need ice cubes. Put some ice in the bottom of the glass and put the cranberry juice. Then pour the blue gatorade next, but be sure that you are pouring it on top of ice (and not right into the drink or it will mix). Do the same with the 7-Up (remember pour onto the ice so it doesn’t mix). The differences in sugar allow these drinks to sit on top of one another and not mix. Kids love it.

July 4th 2012 in Bay Ridge Brooklyn

What’s happening in Brooklyn on the 4th of July?

2013 UPDATE HERE

There is always something to do in Brooklyn. Usually family and friends get together and barbecue to celebrate the 4th. Some people like to head down to Shore Road and go to the huge Bay Ridge picnic. You can bring your own cooler and picnic food OR you can purchase it there. They have good music, rides and games for the kids.

Some people like to go to Coney Island to go to the beach, go on the rides and see the annual hotdog eating contest.

Sunday Sunrise

For the past four summers, it became a ritual for me to stay awake the whole day Saturday until Sunday’s sunrise. Obviously this summer is no different. It isn’t hard to do because I always find stuff to do. I love seeing the quiet of the morning before everyone wakes up and the noises we have become accustomed to take over the house.

But today’s sunrise was a bit sweeter as I watched the waves. I love how the pic is a bit tilted as I was lounging.  Happy Summer!

The Weekend Brought Good News!

Over the weekend, we were at a friends house for a barbecue and Lee received a phone call with some amazing news. He came over to me and said: “take a ride with me  – this party needs some more things from the store and I need to tell you some something.”

When we got to the car his eyes beamed with pride as he told me the news he couldn’t wait to share.  I am writing this blog so I don’t forget the amazing feeling I felt.. so proud of him and so in love because as he explained his news he told me what he wanted it to do for us (sorry cryptic for a reason – we haven’t shared the news with family and friends yet so the internet will have to wait).

And to God I am so so grateful…Jeremiah 29:11

The Words We Choose

I love literature and languages. I enjoy writing and reading other people’s work too.

And it’s no secret that I love the Internet.

But I don’t love when people use the Internet to tear other people down because of their own hurt feelings or secret agendas.  And how do I teach children not to engage in these petty games when adults are doing it?

We’re all here on earth for a short time and you can use your words to break people down and make yourself feel better for a day or two OR you can use your words to make other people’s days brighter.  And I’ll tell you, in the long run, the second one will help bring you much more happiness and peace.

Zechariah 8:16 These are the things that you shall do: Speak the truth to one another; render in your gates judgments that are true and make for peace.

Ryan’s Going Home Tomorrow!

We are thrilled to hear good news today – Ryan is going home tomorrow (fingers crossed). He responded to a new medicine given late yesterday and was well today. I spoke to him on the phone and he was cheerful and happy (like usual).
Thank you for all the prayers.
