Busy September

September always keeps me busy. We started the school year and my new classes are awesome!  

Saturday we cleaned the yard in the morning and then we went to a gathering which we won’t discuss. 

Sunday was the Third Avenue Festival. I hadn’t gone in a few years because September is always busy. Yet, this year a good friend of mine wanted to go so I went. And the Festival was great. What I came home to was more amazing though. Lee washed all the laundry (correctly)  and folded all the laundry.  He cleaned the washing machine and dryer and he deep cleaned the dryers vent (with a kit like this)  He is always a reminder to me of what’s right and fantastic in the world. God did good when he gave me Leon.  

So that’s all I felt like writing about!

Everyone knows you can go to Best Buy (Caesar’s Bay – 8923 Bay Pkwy) to purchase cameras or camcorders. There is a small, but current supply of cameras and supplies at PC Richards (576-80 86th St). There are also some local camera stores we use in Brooklyn or NYC because they have more supplies in stock.

Name Labels for Children’s Clothes

When kids go to  daycare or school, some schools ask them to label their clothes. Some people use a sharpie on all of the labels, some buy these cute iron on labels with the child’s name. Some children’s clothes do not have labels inside, like items from Children’s Place or sneakers. These adhesive labels are also call them sticky labels or school labels. Car Service in Bay Ridge Which Will Pick You Up at the Airport

If you are at the airport or you have traveled away from the neighborhood and are flying into the airport, it’s easy to contact one of our local car services to get them to pick you up. 

• Harborview – $40 plus $33 in tolls to get to Newark Airport (this is cheaper than Uber which is $82 and another local place which is $90)

Malliotakis Doesn’t Get the Job Done – FOURTH TIME INTRODUCING A BILL ON PAPER

If you wonder why very little gets done in the NY Assembly, it’s because the same politicians keep introducing the same old bills – YEAR AFTER YEAR!

I saw Assemblywoman Malliotakis tweet this and it looked familiar.  I knew I saw an article about it awhile back so I did a search. It sounds great to move to digital documents and save money, but  the reality is Malliotakis introduced this bill three times in the last three years! 

Malliotakis talked about reducing paper in the Assembly:

1) In 2011 (check out the crazy picture posted with it)

2) In 2012 (this picture will continue appearing over and over)

3) Again in June 2013. Obviously paper can’t be reduced here probably because it’s hard to read documents on a computer screen. Can you imagine legislatures saying they didn’t know about the sneaky parts of bills because they didn’t have the printed document?   Remember Marty Golden’s tax breaks for developers bill. The whole bill is printed so that politicians like Malliotakis can’t say she didn’t see those addresses put in the bill when she voted for those tax breaks!

So while you are hoping the Assembly will pass some great laws to help our neighborhood, education, taxes, etc. this assemblywoman keeps introducing the same bills over and over.  

AND NOW IT’S 2014 AND SHE IS BRINGING IT UP AGAIN – Move on Malliotakis!

It’s no secret that I haven’t liked Malliotakis since her failure to distribute donated gifts to children on time and the terrible education plan that she worked on while on the Education committee.

Dr. Arthur J. Hughes – Lucky to Have Known Him

I received a call from a friend who asked me if I heard that Dr. Hughes died. Time felt like it stopped and for a few seconds, I felt the silence that people often feel when they find out someone has died.  Dr. Hughes was not only one of the best teachers I ever had, but he was an amazing human being. If you happen to wander upon this page and knew him, I’m sure you would echo the same thoughts.

I met Dr. Hughes my sophomore year at St.Francis College and  I took a class with him every semester thereafter. I was a history major and he was the head of the history department. Dr. Hughes’ lectures were thought-provoking. He really loved history and culture and wanted his students to experience it. It was at St. Francis that I started to love history because of the amazing people who taught history there. Dr. Hughes was the author of several books.

Dr. Hughes really loved sharing his knowledge. He ran seminars for senior citizens to attend at the college with the students. Dr, Hughes woke up early on Saturday morning to tour NYC – I remember he took us to the pier and we saw amazing art – it was all made of gold and imported as an exhibit for just a short time. Dr. Hughes has us try Middle Eastern as he arranged for us to go to a Middle Eastern Restaurant on Atlantic Avenue. He sat with us and told us about the food and he told stories – great stories…..real great stories.

When I knew Dr. Hughes, I was a young woman. He was so encouraging and he pushed me to work harder and get involved at school. What else could a young woman in college need? I loved helping him run events and just being around him because he was so positive. Dr, Hughes was someone who lived life well. His love of life and teaching was always obvious. He’s someone I will always admire and I was fortunate enough to know. They say that everyone has ten pivotal people in their life – he was one of my ten.

RIP – Prayers for Dr. Hughes’ family (you were the real light of his life and he loved to tell us about you)

Eric Garner is Dead Over Selling Loosies

Loosies are loose cigarettes

What if there was no video of the police attacking Garner? No one would believe how horribly he was treated or rather NO ONE WOULD BELIEVE IT WAS THIS BAD.

Usually I support the NYPD because my friends (and former students) put their lives on the line. There are people who do the wrong thing in all lines of work.

A person shouldn’t have to spend the last hour of their life on the floor barely breathing at the shoes of a police officers for selling loosies.
