Dyker Heights Christmas Lights
Usually people want to know what the best streets are for the Dyker Heights Christmas Lights. But this year, tour buses will be looking at the lights.
Parking is going to be taken away from Dyker Heights residents so tour buses can park. Someone is making major money from showing the Christmas lights to tourists. Not to mention there will be a lot more congestion in Dyker Heights. Plus air p0llution will rise in Dyker Heights as well.
Something Just Isn’t Right Here……don’t worry, there’s a lot of slick people in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn. They have big mouths and I bet some will roar like lions…..or just turn off their lights to the tour buses. ;)

November 29, 2016Remembering My Dad
Today is my Dad’s birthday. I am often reminded of him in strange way. Our families were playing a game over the holiday weekend and one of the questions was, “What was your nickname when you were a kid?”
I hadn’t thought of this nickname in many years and the memory of it made me laugh. My father traveled internationally for his work. After he returned from a month long trip from Germany, he called me a word which meant little frankfurter. I wouldn’t be able to spell it correctly because I don’t know German and wasn’t able to find it online. The memory of the name made me laugh – not because the name was funny, but somehow there is always a reminder of him around important days.
Happy Birthday Dad.

Hazuki Matsushita and her almost year old son, Isse Salazar have been missing for a week. Hazuki Matsushita is 39 years old and lives in Bay Ridge. She was last seen leaving her mother-in-laws home on Roosefelt Island with her son. There’s a lot more to this story – see here! Story here

November 23, 2016Carlos Menchaca – Fear Mongling or Blaming Teachers To Get His Name in the News?
Councilman Carlos Menchaca’s office released an alarming press release last week.
Papers and blogs all posted articles with similar titles to: Teachers Tell Immigrant Studnets in Bay Ridge and Sunset Park to Start Packing their Bags. Yes, disgusting. I knew in my heart immediately that it couldn’t be true because teachers consider their students as “their kids.”
So is Menchaca grandstanding and using the new President to get media coverage? YES!
Here you can see The Brooklyn Paper used the word staff in the title, but then wrote: Carlos Menchaca says teachers.……
Hannah Frishberg’s article with The Sunset Park Voice has an address with the word teachers, but the article shows the word employees.

They put this update on the article:Update: The headline of this story originally said “teachers” when in fact it was “non-teacher” employees who made the remarks, as we specify in the body of the article. We are very sorry for the confusion, we were confused ourselves. At least it comes as a relief that no educators were saying this. The content of this piece has not been changed, only the headline.
It’s Tuesday, November 22, 2016 and the Community Education Council for District 17 shows this article with the title, “Councilman: Teachers telling immigrant Brooklyn students to ‘start packing their bags’ after Trump election.” Neither Menchaca, or his staff have written a message to correct the sharing of the article. Menchaca did not correct it.
The Bensonhurst Bean put a message at the end of the article:
When pressed for the details, Menchaca’s office said, ” there no reports of teachers making racially charged statements, but that what is being “reported to our office is a mix of questionable communication by various people in school settings.”
Carlos Menchaca didn’t release an apology. Later the title was changed to: “Councilman: Public school staff telling immigrant Brooklyn students to ‘start packing their bags’ after Trump election” But put your mouse over the underlined words and you will see it’s still mentions the teachers. Menchaca didn’t care that NYC teachers were being tagged like this. He just wanted a story with his name.
Sunset Park sees Menchaca as a Councilman who ignores their neighborhood (see comments on this article) and that’s what I have seen as well. This Summer their was an incident of hate towards women or Muslims and Menchaca never spoke about the incident – he remained silent. To see Carlos Menchaca used teachers to get media coverage is horrendous. If anyone at a school spoke this way to a student, I would expect it to be handled quickly and the person removed from the school. Menchaca should have spoken with the principal and Carmen Farina – not the media.

November 23, 2016Press Release Queen Malliotakis Loads Our Papers with Nonsense
Paula Katinas, writer for the Brooklyn Eagle and the Kings County Politics blog have nearly the same article. While Malliotakis wants to let us know she wrote a letter to the MTA, nothing has really happened and nothing will happen. In April, Malliotakis wrote to the MTA and nothing happened then either – see the press released stories here and here. Malliotakis is just an ineffective leader who is fooling no one. At some point doesn’t one of Nicole’s friends, advisers or even her family tell her to use the position to actually do some work?
Both stories begin with: “In light of the MTA announcement” BOTH WRITERS DIDN’T EVEN BOTHER TO REWRITE THE PRESS RELEASE

Here’s some places which are having New Year’s Eve Events in Bay Ridge or in the surrounding area! If you know of others or are a business having a New Year’s Eve Party, leave the details in the comments (Comments don’t display).
If you are a parent and you want to celebrate the New Year with your children – here are some ideas.
1) The Owls Head Bar – 476 74th Street is open and I put them at the top of the list because if you forgot to make plans (or didn’t have the $ for the New Years Eve Parties, it’s good to know where the regular priced places are). It’s a nice place – wine and craft beer.

New Year’s Eve at The Brooklyn Firefly! A Jazz with Cristina Gatti at 9PM. Bar seating is also available for dinner, and is first come first serve. Reservations for the jazz set in the back room are at two hour limits in the timeslots of 6pm, 8pm, and 10pm. If you’re sitting in the jazz room, you have to purchase a bottle (wine, liquor, champagne, etc.)

November 20, 2016Relax Bay Ridge….Homeless People are Sleeping in the Banks
Many New Yorkers are having some hard times and are homeless. They came to stay in Bay Ridge because they want to be safe. The City hasn’t made a good enough plan to help them yet.
Now that it is getting cold they are staying in banks at night.
It’s not convenient and you may have to walk to the next bank if you don’t feel safe enough going into the bank vetibule where someone is sleeping,
But let’s say you didn’t have any kids with you and you weren’t afraid. You could bring a sandwich or a cup of coffee with to the bank and make someone’s day. It’s some good medicine for you (not the other person) to do some good in the world while there is so much negativity.
We are all fortunate to being doing well and I would hope someone would be kind to my family or friends if they were down on their luck.

A car was just stolen from Richmond Avenue in Staten Island and there was a baby in the backseat! On twitter, I saw this:
The baby was 3 months old. Her Mom ran into Dunkin Donuts and left the car running. Story here
Thank God the car was found on 53rd Street and 3rd Avenue in Brooklyn! I can’t imagine how frantic the parents must have been!

November 19, 2016Marty Golden’s Office Has Some Common Sense……..FINALLY!
Senator Golden is great at giving speeches, but he isn’t a good manager. For years, we have watched his staff make him look foolish. Finally he hired some men who are real community activists with common sense – they have a new page called Graffiti Squad. Bay Ridge and other areas of Brooklyn have lame graffiti artists who use templates or stickers on posts and mailboxes. Marko Kepi went out spraying over the graffiti. On Senator Golden’s Facebook page, he wrote if you see graffiti in our community you can call my office at 718-238-6044 and Marko & James will remove it.
In October, Senator Golden retweeted his staff member, John Quaglione’s tweet with a picture and complaint about graffiti. Instead of getting a can of paint and taking care of the graffiti, Quaglione went on social media to complain about it. On Twitter, I questioned why Marty Golden would retweet that because it isn’t helpful! In fact, posting pictures of graffiti just gives publicity to the graffiti artist. The same finger that taps the phone can be used to press the button on the spray paint.
If the staff member who retweeted this on Twitter didn’t know any better, than Marty’s Chief of Staff should have told them to take it down/.
I’m glad Senator Golden finally has some workers who are interested in helping the community and have some common sense. Thank you Marko and James. BTW, I think this is the first time in seven years that I have written something positive about Marty Golden.
