70 Year Old Bay Ridge Woman Attacked in Her Apartment

A 70 year old Bay Ridge woman living on Ovington Avenue was attacked by a 42 year old man, who forcefully entered her apartment after 10 pm on Friday (Video clip here). Hernandez was seen knocking on doors in the apartment building. The elderly woman woman answered the door and tough guy, Luis Hernandez beat the elderly lady in her apartment. I saw a photographer post this.

Thankfully other residents in the apartment building called the police and Hernandez was arrested for home invasion and forced entry.   Story here and here

Why I Didn’t March…

In my lifetime, I’ve never seen protests get things done. Productive protests for civil rights and the Feminist Movement were before my time.  

When I was a 9 or 10 years old, my Mother joined with some other moms in Sunset Park to protest prostitutes working on 4th Avenue and 60th Street. The prostitutes weren’t there during the sunny afternoon as we walked around on their work grounds, but the mother’s protest didn’t derail them from returning there.  Besides learning what a prostitute was that day, I also learned that protesting when no one is around doesn’t do anything. 

As a college student, there weren’t any protests to join. It’s not that people were satisfied with the state of the city, it’s that people had no faith in leaders like Mayor Guiliani because the city was in a bad state (it was filthier than it is now). Back then, people were interested in overhauling the whole government and they did bu voting – Bill Clinton became president and David Dinkins became NYC’s mayor.

In 2003, the city threatened eminent domain on my family’s business. We protested against eminent domain and quickly learned that issue was a done deal with most politicians. In 2007, my family fought and won in court (pro se) because the written laws of our country protect citizens more than they realize.  

I’ve watch local politicians like Marty Golden and Nicole Malliotakis stand year after year  in front of our Verrazano bridge, but it’s just for a picture and to fool you into believing they are doing something – see 2012, 2013,  2014  and 2015. When I see other politicians continue the silliness of pulling out a podium for a picture, I realize they don’t know any other way to get something done. 

Over a million women were out marching yesterday and it was beautiful!  I believe their anthem falls on deaf ears with this president. While I know the women wanted this march to be about standing up against inequality, it may have been more about getting the millennial generation to work together and vote.  And if Trump pols try to reverse Roe v. Wade, those women will be ready to fight. Maybe we will even see crowded poll sites in the future. Oh and if there are any nasty women in Bay Ridge (or men who understand what is going on), please run against Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis or Senator Golden in the next election.  Both ran unopposed during the last election. And there are ways to fight the Trump group -> ask Congress to not support the nomination of Betsy DeVos  (see here).

Petit Oven in Bay Ridge is Closed and for Sale

UPDATE: August 2017 – Little Forno Opened – See here  Petit Oven is now Little Forno – new owners.

Petit Oven closed their doors for good. It’s another small business in Bay Ridge that we are sad to see close. The women who owned the small French cusine restaurant were pleasant and the place was fantastic. I hope they continue to do well.  Chef Kat cooked her duck against Bobby Flay (see video around 8:40).  Update: story here

Menchaca and Williams Grandstanding

While NY’ers are upset with the results of an election, Carlos Menchaca and Juumane Williams are grandstanding to get media attention. Story here

Menchaca and Williams resisted arrest at a rally outside Trump Tower.  What these politicians didn’t get was that protest was about the people – not a few individuals who wanted to make the paper.

Bay Ridge Man Committed Suicide

This morning before 10 AM, a 47 year old man jumped from the top of his apartment building on 80th Street off Third Avenue  (it looks like 269 – 80th Street from the photo). The article states he suffered from depression.

RIP tortured soul.

St. Agatha School is Closing

On January 9th, Saint Agatha’s School announced that it was closing its doors for good on June 30, 2017.  St. Agatha’s is on 48th Street and 7th Avenue.

St. Agatha is a small school that always seemed to be forgotten about. Actually, I am surprised it is open this long.  An online petition written by a parent seems to suggest that the school needs a lot of repair, but that there is also a surplus of money too. People seem to think that the Catholic Diocese is closing the school so they can rent out the building and make more money. (PS 516 is formerly Saint Michael’s School – 42nd Street and 4th Avenue)

It looks like this school is about to bite the dust like other Catholic schools in Brooklyn. 

The parents started a Go Fund me Page here and a  petition to keep Saint Agatha’s open.

Treyger’s Press Release is Far From the Truth

Councilman Mark Treyger pumped a press release out and Kings County Politics printed it. While Treyger’s section of Brooklyn is FILTHY and people who live there complain about it, Treyger’s press release tells otherwise.

Press releases are the lazy politicians way to do nothing and pretend that things got done.

Matter Comes to Bay Ridge

Matter announced that they are taking over a storefront 7604 – 3rd Avenue that Bon Chovie’s (or Zito’s Sandwich Shop) occupied.  718-650-3030

They will serve coffee during the day and also have be a night spot. Matter applied for a liquor license.

Update:  They received their license in February 2017 (SAJE BUSINESS CORP (doing business as MATTER).  Not open yet.

August 2017 – Matter is open. Serving Cafe Grumpy coffee, quiches and pastries.

62 Year Old Bay Ridge Man Carjacked and Had $25,000 Taken

On Monday at 10:15 am, a Bay Ridge man was carjacked.  Story here

A local newspaper reported that the man was a business owner who was targeted.  Very sad that someone was attacked for their car.

But interesting that they had $25,000 in the car (second story says it’s $20,000). Yes, it was in the car because else the story would say they stole the car owner’s wallet. 

The car was found, but of course the money was gone.

I’m lucky I have $1.50 in my car at any time, but apparently some people have $25,000.

Bay Ridge Cares is kicking off the new year with a free Community Pancake Breakfast!

Breakfast will be prepared by Tom’s Restaurant and is FREE, but a suggested donation of $5.00 per person (at the door) would be appreciated. Menu includes pancakes, eggs, bacon (both turkey and pork), coffee, juice and conversation!

You must make a reservation in advance (here)- no walk-ins. Seating is limited to 225 people, so please reserve early. Unfortunately, the location is not wheelchair accessible. You can reserve online or you can call (718)989-9566.

Curling – Classes for Kids in Brooklyn

If you have ever seen curling, you would want to learn to curl. What is curling? It’s like shuffleboard on ice. You have to move a 40 pound stone by warming the ice with the broom to make it slide. Teams do this and it becomes very competitive. Curling was created in Scotland, but is now popular in Canada. Here’s what curling looks like:

Prospect Park now has curling lessons.  $215 for  four 90–minute classes. Lessons are given on Wednesday and Sundays from  November 19–December 17

Even the New York Times wrote about curling at Prospect Park.

If you have 15 or more people, you can reserve time to have a curling match at Prospect Park.
