Bay Ridge Father is a Hero in Coney Island
NY Post PhotoWilliam O’Connell saved an 11 year old girl’s life this weekend.
On Saturday afternoon around 1:30 pm, William O’Connell, a well known photographer in Bay Ridge (and also for the NY Post) was at Coney Island beach with his son and friends. An 11 year old girl went under the water lifeguards could not find her. O’Connell dove in to get her. He handed the girl to the lifeguards. The lifeguard resuscitated the girl and then an ambulance brought her to the hospital.
Locally, O’Connell is known for being a generous photographer to his community.

August 21, 2017Bay Ridge Republicans Debate on Channel 1
On Friday, the Republican candidates for Community District 43 appeared on Channel 1 News: Road to City Hall with Errol Lewis. Bob Capano was the only candidate who announced on Facebook that he would be on the show.
The debate began with Errol Lewis asking John Quaglione about removing the five cents tax on bottles and cans. NYC Council has no jurisdiction over the bottle/can tax and only state legislatures, like Marty Golden can adjust this law. It’s funny that Quaglione always points out things that his boss, Senator Golden hasn’t done.
The debate was downhill for Quaglione after his opening remarks. In the past two debates, Quaglione read from his notes. Errol Lewis doesn’t allow politicians to read from their notes on his show. See: Debate 1 & Debate 2
Quaglione became confrontational with Bob Capano over silly things.
Capano went into a discussion about DeBlasio and drug injection facilities. His points were also overshadowed by his pettiness in mentioning Linda Sarsour and El-Yateem.
* Bob Capano has spent so much time on Sarsour and El-Yateem that he wasn’t prepared to counter Quaglione. Quaglione is on the Board of Directors at St. Anselm School. St. Anselm has a huge Universal Pre-K Program funded by Bill DeBlasio. St. Anselm has 79 seats for UPK this year! St. Anselm only has 265 students including the UPK program. Would St. Anselm’s have stayed open without DeBlasio’s UPK program?
Liam McCabe began the debate well as he discussed his thoughts on ticketing and arresting can collectors who are trespassing. The 68th Precinct doesn’t have the man-power to ticket/arrest can collectors.
McCabe mentioned going after the can collection centers which are taking the cans to other states. Finally, McCabe discussed illegal conversions and said that if he was elected, he would continue to fight against home conversions.
Quaglione was given the opportunity to ask one of his opponents a question. Quaglione went after Lucretia with: ‘At the first Republican Debate, we were asked if we didn’t win the primary, would we support the winning Republican candidates. If you don’t win, will you support the winner?” It was such a poorly thought out question from an opponent! Lucretia crushed Quaglione for not supporting her in the past and for asking such a silly question. She said firmly and confidently that she will support those who supported her.
Quaglione and McCabe jabbed at each other over nonsense. McCabe was able to get in that he was the ONLY candidate at the table who had never run for office, while Quaglione, Capano and Potter have run and lost before. Yet, Lucretia Regina Potter is an elected Republic District Leader.
Liam was given an opportunity to ask a question of an opponent. He went for Lucretia as well. He asked Lucretia about her program for pets. Lucretia had mentioned this at the debate earlier in the week. I’m not sure why he handed her the floor like that, but Lucretia was well spoken and discussed a detailed plan for helping seniors citizens with pet bills, as well as trapping feral cats, having them fixed and released back into their colony to fight the rate problem in the city. Again, she came off looking well-informed and in touch with the community.
McCabe also asked Lucretia if she would support him. He offered her hand to shake and she left him hanging.
Lucretia Regina Potter was the winner of the Republican Debate. She’s well-spoken and could easily discuss whatever was thrown at her. Not only was Lucretia knowledgeable about each topic, but she presented views for senior citizens, mothers and women.
Thanks for the debate Channel 1 News and Errol Lewis for being a great moderator. This is the second time we heard from Lucretia Regina Potter and she was consistent. (See first debate). It’s sad that some Republicans have not been supportive of her, but that seems to be a trend in this area.

August 20, 2017Politicians Playing Catch a Confederate Sign Picture in Bay Ridge
On August 1, 2017, no one was talking about tearing down statues.
On August 7, 2017, the newspapers wrote about the Army Base’s letter refusing the four politicians request (see pols names here). Eric Adams tweeted that he made the request for the signs to be taken down in 2015. El-Yateem didn’t say anything about the signs at Fort Hamilton (see here).

On August 14, 2017 Khader El-Yateem held a press release in front of the army base. He began by spelling out his first and last name to the press (see here). The sound on his recording could not be heard so El-Yateem’s staff transcribed his speech (see here). The news played what John Hagan, the teacher said. Yet, Aber Kawas’ speech was cut from most news stations/stories. Only the Brooklyn Reporter used her picture and quote. Even El-Yateem’s team didn’t transcribe her words.

On August 15th, Khader El-Yateem stood outside of the defunct St. John’s Church to mumble some words (see here) and watch a plaque be removed from a tree. People in Bay Ridge either didn’t know about the plaque or they knew it existed, but didn’t know what it said. Yet, El-Yateem said: “This is a sign of division in our community and it has to be removed.” (Source) El-Yateem has been a pastor in the community for almost 20 years. If this plaque was a sign of division for so long, why didn’t he seek to have it removed years ago?
After the plaque was cut off, nothing changed in the world. It’s not about the signs. It’s about people being angry because of other things/issues. People want to feel like they are getting some control and feeling like they ignited change in this strange time under Trump.
Go to 2:36 on this video and you can see this Bay Ridge resident lived near the church and she didn’t know what the plaque said. She obviously loves Bay Ridge and history, but the plaque isn’t a big deal to residents:
Politicians want us to look away from their lackluster backgrounds. El-Yateem is a candidate who wants to use the city council seat to support BDS and promote Palestine. The picture-playing politician got some free press and a the end of the week, El-Yateem boasted that he was the winner of City and State’s press this week (see here).
On Tuesday August 22nd at 11 am, the four original pols are coming to Bay Ridge get their pictures taken in front of an army base gate because El-Yateem stole their thunder and they didn’t get any credit for their work. They even have a raindate (August 24th). El-Yateem mentioned them later on Facebook – sorry charley, this guy is trying to get press for his campaign.
Politicians demanding the army base do something without actually sitting down with some representatives at the army base shows that this is all about the picture-taking politicians. Sitting down with someone, hearing their side and helping them see your side is the only responsible thing that should be done at this point.
The Army Base should consider changing the name because of the families who live on the base have complained. I don’t think anyone would want a child of someone serving in our military to feel uncomfortable in their home. I understand that people don’t want history to be erased, but c’mon people, if you don’t go on the base, this situation is not important to you. I hope the Army can come to some compromise as I know there is a Harbor Defense Museum on the base that might be a good place to keep the signs.
In Maryland, statues were removed from parks late at night and no politicians took pictures. (See here and here) I guess they have pols who don’t need to play politics over this issue.
