Need some time away from your child to get some work done on your laptop or study for classes?

Play Days and Parties worked with Heather at Bay Ridge Families to come up with amazing deal for parents!  

Parents of children ages 6 months to 4 years old can have a  a comfortable place to work from From 9:00 – 10:30 am on Mondays and Thursday.  Regular Open Play will not begin until 11:00 am on these days.

Cost:

$20.00 (covers one adult and one child)
$5.00 for each additional sibbling

Package includes:

90 mins use of one of our 2 shared work spaces (you choose between the closed off room in back, or the open area next to the play space – simply stand up to see your kid(s) above the half height dividing wall), unlimited brewed coffee or tea with choice of specialty creamers, cookies, WiFi, and child care. Please note: this is NOT a drop-off care program at this point, a parent must remain on location during the program.

Safety is a priority! To ensure we have enough child care providers to maintain a maximum ratio of 1 sitter per 5 children, reservations must be made in advance by phone or email using any major credit card. Reservations can be made at [email protected].

Cancellation policy:

Full refund 24 hours prior to start time.
Half refund if you cancel morning of reservation.

Richard Luthmann Arrested. Interest in Brooklyn?

Richard Luthmann got arrested this week. Luthmann is a Staten Island attorney. Normally I don’t write about Staten Islanders, but he had an interest in Bay Ridge and his story is like one our of a mob movie, so it’s worth mentioning.    

Richard Luthmann was slapped with an 11-count indictment. WOOOO these are a lot of  serious charges  – see here.  If he is convicted, he faces up to life in prison. Most people get out on bail while they await their hearing, Richard Luthmann and the men charged with him are  all temporarily held without bail until defense attorneys make bail arguments next week.  (Story)

I first heard of Luthmann in the Summer when there were reports in the paper that he had made a Facebook and was smearing several political candidate including Janine Mattera, a Staten Island Republican candidate who was running against Debi Rose.  See  here.   

I also remembered seeing Luthmann was an attorney representing the Reform Party. Bob Capano and Sal Albanese were endorsed by the Reform Party and ran for office in Bay Ridge.

In November, I saw Richard Luthmann going back and forth with Conservative Party Leader, Gerard Kassar – see here  If you look at Kassar’s current tweets, he shared the information about Luthmann and jabbed at Capano:

One thing that’s always telling is money. Who did Luthmann give money to? He gave it to Republicans, Democrats and Reform Party politicians

In the Bay Ridge City Council Election:

Richard Luthmann gave $175 to Vincent Chirico first (June 2017)

Then Luthmann gave $50 to Liam McCabe’s campaign:

Finally Luthmann gave $200 to Capano – first just $25, but then months later $175

What was Luthmann trying to accomplish by donating to all three parties? Why was he so interested in who the city council representative would be from Bay Ridge? 

Luthmann also donated to Sal Albanese’s campaign, but Albanese was running for mayor and it would be normal for Luthmann to look at the mayoral race. He also gave money to other pols including Tish James.

Strangely, Luthmann is only 38 years old. I thought he was a lot older.

Charlie Ragusa Needs to Step Aside

Stephen Witt covered a fundraiser for  District Leader, Charlie Ragusa. Ragusa is the current district leader in Bath Beach/Coney Island. Why does this matter to Bay Ridge? Because District Leaders in the area offer support to neighboring districts (or in Ragusa’s case, non-support).

What Witt failed to address in his article is that Charlie Ragusa is a dead weight to the Democratic Party and he needs to step aside. While Ragusa may have started out with good motives in earlier years, he allowed pettiness to come between him and being a representative for the Democratic Party. Basically, Ragusa serving as a District Leader is like asking a  Republican to represent the Democratic Party. Frank Seddio should make a call here and have a passionate Democratic leader step up and run for this office. 

I met Charlie Ragusa several times and he is a pleasant person.  But that does not mean that he is a good District Leader.

Justin Brannan, a popular Democrat in Bay Ridge ran and won the City Council seat. Instead of supporting Brannan, Ragusa supported running an out-of-district candidate (Nancy Tong). Brannan beat Tong in the primary as predicted because Tong wasn’t knowledgeable enough about Bay Ridge. For the November election, Tong and Treyger showed party loyalty and threw their support behind Justin Brannan, while we didn’t see or hear from Ragusa.

Unfortunately for the Democrats, this has been true for other elections as well. Charlie only supports a few of his friends for office in Coney Island. Ragusa was also particularly bitter in the article and couldn’t let the past go.

I’ve learned a lot about district leaders over the last few years. And one thing is certain, Ragusa has the wrong mindset for this position. Ragusa should step aside and allow someone who wants to advance the Democratic Party to run for the position.

Manhole Fire on 5th Avenue and 79th Street

A manhole fire took place on 5th Avenue and 79th Street in Bay Ridge. See video here

The owners of that car aren’t going to have a clue as to what happened as all the commotion and their car is damaged.

The Fifth Avenue Trolley is running today, but it got held up with the firetrucks taking care of this and now had to be rerouted a bit to get around this.

Warren Chan What the Heck Were You Thinking?

I was disappointed to see the news about Warren Chan (article by Kadia Goba)

Although I don’t know Chan personally, I did speak with him online awhile back. He seemed like a man who was very interested in helping his community.  I was sad to see that he was so rude on social media.  Chan is best known for speaking up for the Asian community in this part of Brooklyn when others haven’t. He was adamant about looking at the tenant’s side of illegal home conversions as well. What was he thinking? Didn’t he realize that people respected him? 

Of course Justin Brannan kicked Chan off of his transition team. That wouldn’t surprise anyone in Bay Ridge as  Justin is on the brink of a very exciting year and doesn’t have time for racism and nonsense like that.

Chan should issue an apology to Assemblywoman Yuh-Line Niou. His comment was uncalled for, lewd and disrespectful. 

This is not the first time that I have seen an member of the Asian community lash out at Assembly member Yuh-Line Niou. The other time was just as unwarranted and Niou has always been very professional in her response. 

Assemblywoman Niou holds Shelly Silvers old seat in the NY Assembly.
