Kadia Goba wrote about Rafael Espinal’s bill about basements. Espinal is a Councilman for Bed Stuy, Brownsville and East New York. Goba’s been writing about our area for a long time so I am sure that her coverage on this bill was intentional for readers in our area. Does the Brooklyn Housing Preservation Alliance and the Dyker Heights Civic Association know about Councilman Espinal’s bill?
Did Rafael Espinal research Brooklyn and see if there were any existing issues around this? Hasn’t he heard what Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights have been experiencing with illegal conversions?

February 7, 2018Insurance Brooklyn Homeowners Should Consider
When we moved to Bay Ridge, I contacted Homeserve because although an inspector said the heating system was okay, I wanted to be able to call someone and get service if it stopped worked. I needed it that first year – our bill would have been just under $300 if we didn’t have the coverage.
- Homeserve Heating System Protection
– The first year we paid $12 a month (it’s a discounted rate) Now we pay $329 for the year. Homeserve comes every Fall to service the machine (included in the plan)
Our friend had trouble with her sewer line being clogged by tree roots. In NYC, home owners are responsible for this. She paid almost $5000 to have this taken care of. We bought:
- Sewer Septic Line Repair Plan $8.99 a month
Recently Homeserve came out with a new plan and we got it:
- Exterior Water Service Line Coverage. In the first year, it’s $2.99 a month (the letter says it is saving us 50% the first year….on their site it shows $6.99 a month). We paid $35.88 for the year.
While we don’t see too many problems with water lines, there have been a few and it’s peace of mind to have the coverage.
I have no connection to Homeserve other than that I am a customer.

The Bay Ridge Jewish Center is having Sing Along Shabbat on Saturday, February 10th at 10:45 am – 11:45 am.
Families with children under the age of five (with older siblings and caregivers) are welcome to join in for singing, guitar, musical prayer, challah, and grape juice!

February 6, 2018Private Legislation for Immigration
Journalist, Julianna McShane shared information about a private bill that Nydia Velazquez wrote to help Ravi Ragbir (ICE is trying to deport him)
McShane shared: “There’s info online – I just learned about this today as well. A private bill requires the same approval process as a “public” bill to become law, with the support of both chambers & the president.”
It appears as though there’s 50 currently in Congress, but that they’re unlikely to pass & more symbolic than anything else. See here

February 5, 2018Malliotakis – Mayor de Blasio – Property Tax
This is the first time I will write something positive about Nicole Malliotakis. It won’t last long, so enjoy it Nicole. Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis went after the Mayor during today’s meeting. The Mayor was left looking ridiculous because he has promised property tax reform, yet he isn’t delivering.
Malliotakis compared her Staten Island tax bill to the Mayor’s property tax bill in Park Slope. The Mayor said people want more services and people want their property values to go up. I contacted the Mayor four years ago and his staff basically told me the same song. I don’t think he intends to fix the property tax system as it would increase his of Park Slope.
The Mayor is incorrect – we weren’t looking for our property values to go up. When you buy a home that you expect to live in, you aren’t sitting around waiting for the property value to increase.
Malliotakis did a decent job of speaking up. Although she didn’t mention that her constituents in Bay Ridge pay more than she does in Staten Island, she conveyed the message about the uneven distribution of property taxes.
After the meeting, Malliotakis shriveled back up into the typical politician and did her traditional move of creating a petition and asking people to sign the petition. #USELESS I’m not even going to link to her silly petition because a few years ago, we all signed Golden and Malliotakis’ petition to lower the Verrazano Bridge toll and we saw that got nowhere. The following year, they ran the same petition again and it went nowhere.
PS. To Malliotakis staffer that looks at this page all day long……he was mad that I wrote about Assemblywoman Malliotakis having only one message for the Bay Ridge Community Council in eight months – see here.
