Steve Saperstein – No Balloons, Banners or Big Wigs
When someone runs for election around these parts of the city, it’s announced in a big way.
All the big wigs come out in their suits and put on their shiny smiles to take pictures in a semi-circle. It looks like this. (Shout out to Jerry)
And sometimes there are balloons.
But there were no pictures, smiley faces, semi-circle of big wigs or balloons for Steve Saperstein’s announcement as he runs for Assembly (or might be running?)
Kings County Politics says “he is on the brink of an endorsement.” Yeah, that’s not how it’s done usually.
Why are candidates biting the bullet without the party. He did too, but he isn’t running.
McCabe tweeted for Saperstein, but it wasn’t particularly well taken.

May 6, 2018Yalla Brooklyn – New Political Group
Update: By 2021, Yalla was non-existent in Bay Ridge. The last we heard from Yalla was that they were going to have a Martin Luther King march rescheduled to the Spring…..but that never happened.
It was a group that was formed to push El Yateem, but after he lost the group was no longer active in Bay Ridge. We saw the Republicans do the same thing by creating “a group” before an election.
A new political group has organized in Bay Ridge called Yalla Brooklyn. (Let’s go Brooklyn). They are now on Twitter.
The Arabic word Yallah (how I know it to be written) comes from two words Ya (means O) and Allah (God)…it’s used in prayers like Ya Allah (O God).
Yallah also means let’s go or hurry up – which is what it seems to mean here such as Hurry up and Vote, Get involved and Participate…..Brooklyn. Almost to imply – Yalla Vote and make a difference!
Khader El-Yateem is heading the group and it appears to take place at the Salem Arabic Lutheran Church at 414-80th Street in Brooklyn. We’ve also seen the group organize in March.
These activists are Socialists.

May 6, 2018Community Policing is Coming to Bay Ridge – Sign Up for Intro Meeting
![]()
In a few months, the 68th Precinct will have Community Policing. Councilman Justin Brannan spoke about implementing this when he ran for election this past Fall.
Neighborhood Policing is being started in the 62nd Precinct (it is the 62nd Precinct in NYC to have neighborhood policing).
The 62nd Precinct had a meeting on April 24th and I love that they shared the meeting on Youtube!
Community Policing is a change in the NYPD deployment of staff which is going to bring the police and people more together. It’s going to make the NYPD more connected with the community and help gain back the community’s trust.
What will happen under Neighborhood Policing:
a) Neighborhoods will be divided into sectors. Each sector will be assigned a NCO – Neighborhood Community/Coordination Officers and those officers will represent that area from day to day and will have time each day to investigate problems in their sector.
b) Neighborhood Coordination Officers will have meetings every few months. You will find their meetings listed here http://buildtheblock.nyc
c) Residents are given the e-mail addresses of a police officer who is in their sector. See the sectors here.
d) All police phones have a smart phone with an app to translate languages. Some sector police officers speak a second language. *Residents in the 62nd precinct were concerned that there is not an Asian NCO yet.
e) Some police officers will be response officers and will be responding to just 911 calls.
f) Residents are concerned if officers will be in plain clothes and unmarked cars OR if they will be in uniform and NYPD cars. The answer was at first in uniform to maintain the presence – HOORAY – WE NEED THIS NYPD.
g) Social media will be used – Facebook and Twitter (the 68th Precinct does not do this now because they don’t understand how social media can help).
h) NCO’s have gone through training to do outreach and mediation so they are able to get to help residents.
i) The NCO’s introduced themselves at the end of the meeting.
