July 9, 2019Farmers Insurance is Opening on 3rd Avenue
Farmers Insurance is opening at 7207 – 3rd Avenue in Bay Ridge – next to the Brooklyn Beet Company.
Although an insurance office isn’t exciting, it’s one less empty storefront for Bay Ridge!
When I was in high school and college, I remember a lot of friends had car insurance through Farmers Friend.
Good luck to the new owners of this business!

July 9, 2019Senator Gounardes 5 Days Later
![]()
On July 4th, there was a serious accident in Marine Park, Brooklyn. See here
Today, July 9th, Senator Gounardes shared about the accident on Twitter. Why did it take so long for the Senator to respond?
![]()
Gounardes believes, “We are in a crisis!”
How are we in a crisis if just a few weeks ago, Gounardes thought it was okay to overide CB 10’s decision to block certain bike lanes? (See here) Gounardes doesn’t have the authority to speak on the topic of bike lanes – he doesn’t have a degree in transportation or urban planning and hasn’t done anything to show expertise in choosing streets for bike lanes.
Communities have changed, there are more people riding bikes and NYC streets have to change to reflect that. Drawing lines with paint doesn’t make safe streets for people. People can’t ride their bikes with drivers of cars, who are playing with their phones, while trying to steer 3000 pound cars. Protected bike lanes are needed here!

See video here (used with permission)
While Corey Johnson is advocating for 50 miles of covered bike lanes in Manhattan, Andrew Gounardes is not a visionary leader. Gounardes thinks paint on the street is good enough for cyclists in Bay Ridge. The dramatic social-media-senator just wants to tweet about a CRISIS!
While bike lanes could have looked differently here in Bay Ridge, Gounardes didn’t know how to advocate for what our community needed. Gounardes responded to his base and overrode CB 10 without exploring street alternatives for our neighborhood with experts. (See here) Most surprising, there were some parents who were so desperate for the paint-drawn bike lanes in Bay Ridge, they didn’t have the vision to plan for safer streets for their children.
There was also an accident on July 6th in Dyker Heights, but Gounardes didn’t mention that one….maybe he doesn’t know?!

July 9, 2019Circles Cafe Closed – For Rent Sign Up
For months there was speculation on what was happening at Circles Cafe at 6931 3rd Avenue.
For the past few months, Circles restaurant was closed. There was an answering machine message that said there were electrical problems (we’ve seen that businesses that are closing frequently say this in Bay Ridge). Yet, they planned to re-open – see here. Their website showed they planned to sell ice cream. By June, it looked like they decided to closed up – see here
Now the building has been closed up and there are “For Rent” signs on the building.
We’re sorry to see this place go. Circles had been in business for over 40 years at it’s old location. When that place closed, residents were so sad because so many people remembered going there with their family and friends. Circles moved to the 69th Street and 3rd Avenue location last year – see here
Good luck Pierre – we hope you pop up some place in Bay Ridge in the near future!
Where can you get thin pizza like Circles used to sell? Firefly sells thin crispy crust pizza called Lentos Ghost. (Not exactly the same as Lentos, but it’s good). Firefly is at 7003 – 3rd Avenue

And a lot of residents are loving pizza newcomer, Lombardos at 279 71st Street.

July 8, 2019Landscaper Tossing Plants in Bay Ridge
Idk how I feel about this. The landscaping contractor for Shore Road Park is just throwing the plants around. #bayridge pic.twitter.com/ta268z7vX2
— Manny Jalonschi (@MJalonschi) July 8, 2019
No one is watching so they just do whatever. Who hired their cousin for this job? Usually, landscapers are very serious about their job, so this is weird.
Frikng contractors have really done way, way too much damage to Shore Road Park by driving all over the fields, tearing them the pieces. Absolutely horrible. Whole sections of the park have been trampled. Wtf? Disgusting abuse of our green spaces.
