October 6, 2019Chirlane McCray Counted Out Francis Xavier Cabrini
The woman in the picture above is Francis Xavier Cabrini. She was an Italian immigrant, who is known for helping migrants in America. You would think Chirlane McCray would want to show that NYC had a history of helping immigrants and giving them hope. But Cabrini was a Catholic….and although she received the most nominations for the She Built NYC Project, she will not receive a statue.
There is nothing strange or ironic about this – women have been counted out for being “too this” or “not enough that” for so many years. It’s 2019 and women are still counting out other women! Enough is enough – someone build Francis Cabrini a statue and stick it in the middle of New York City somewhere so every person, including Chirlane McCray, knows that no woman will be counted out for anything any more.
Francis Cabrini is known for establishing 67 institutions to help marginalized people. She immigrated to America at age 38 and she didn’t become a United States citizen until age 59. Cabrini was an immigrant, who helped other immigrants and she can’t get a statue because some NYC women deemed that she “isn’t the right type of woman for this project.”
About 1000 people gathered with the Bishop t0o speak up for the patron saint of immigrants.
Commissioner Tom Finkelpearl should be embarrassed that he is supporting cultural exclusion. Frances Xavier Cabrini had the most votes because of her dedication to migrants. NYC right now could learn something from her. Immigrants could have had a statue to give hope.

Dalerjon Shahobiddinov was 10 years old and killed while riding his bike in Kennsington, Brooklyn. See pics and video here
Just 10 years old. The bike can be seen under the car here.
Even a protected bike lane wouldn’t have saved Dalerjon because it was at the corner.
“Victor Mejia, 29, of Brooklyn was arrested and charged with failure to yield to a bicyclist, driving without a license and failure to exercise due care, according to police.” Story here
Now Dalerjon Shahobiddinov’s community will mourn his death. Ten year olds will mourn their classmate’s death.
Prayers for Dalerjon’s family and friends.
If Victor Mejia had a license that was expired – that is different than not having a license at all.
If he didn’t have a license at all, the Brooklyn DA should charge him with murder.

On Saturday, October 12, 2019 from 1:00 – 5:00 pm, there is The Brooklyn Poker Run! This sounds amazing!
Bikers start off at Irish Haven at 5721 4th Avenue. They ride down to the Pier (1st poker card drawn – and kept anonymous til the end!)
Then they ride along the Shore Road bike trail to the Verrazano Bridge, up to Kelly’s Tavern (#2 card), Lonestar (#3 card), Salty Dog (#4 card), The Leif (#5 card), before riding back to Irish Haven to open your cards one at a time to see who wins the poker hand!
$20/person
– Winner takes all
– Must make it to all stops to participate
– If you peek at your cards you’re disqualified ;)

In May 2018, Richie, the owner of C & S Jewelers at 9403 – 3rd Avenue died. His shop remained untouched until a few days ago when the sign went missing. This is across the street from Walgreens if you can’t picture where this is.
The renovated storefront looks great. I thought they were dividing the place into two, but it’s still just one store.

</hIf you’re missing Summer swimming, go to the Family Swim sessions this on the weekend.
These non-instructional sessions are open to the public at three Brooklyn locations:
Saturdays from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at International High School at Prospect Heights (883 Classon Avenue)
Sunday from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM at John Jay High School (237 7th Avenue) OR at Erasmus Hall High School (911 Flatbush Avenue).
The fee is $7 per swimmer.
Bring your swimsuit, a towel and have fun!

October 4, 2019A New School for Bay Ridge on Third Avenue
A local newspaper briefly announced that the building where Lenox Hill Radiology (and it’s adjacent parking lot) at 6740 – 3rd Avenue is set to become an elementary school for 330 students.
That’s all the facts the article provided.
The journalist had access to the politician making the announcement, yet the article is so vague.
It doesn’t provide information about when the school will open or whether the school will have D75 seats (12 to 1 classrooms are needed here). Parents have been calling for more special education seats for this neighborhood for a long time.
The journalist didn’t mention that the property is the whole block 6740 – 6748 3rd Avenue. It doesn’t even say how much was paid for the building. Why was that left out? The property was last sold in 2003 for 5 million (see here) and the sale price would be known if the city made a purchase. It was available for lease since the Spring (on Loopnet)
I feel terrible for this home owner who lives next door to the lot (with it’s sweet double garage) . They didn’t intend to live near a school, so while parents in the community are excited, this isn’t good news for these home owners. As I wrote that, I realized they probably don’t know the property next to them has been sold.
No need to feel sorry for the homeowner below as 270 Senator and the medical center are the same owner and the property was recorded together – see here
And of course people will be wondering about traffic. If this property allowed the school to be built taller, then maybe there would still be room for a lot where the school bus can pull in with the children. Dropoffs aren’t going to be pretty there.
Maybe another journalist will give more information this week.

Gerard Kassar says that Malliotakis’ accomplishment is that she beat her opponent in 2011. But she couldn’t beat Bill de Blasio!!!!
Kassar does not live in an area that is represented by Nicole Malliotakis.
Nicole Malliotakis voted for tax breaks for developers. This was Golden’s bill and she was silent on social media after the vote. When I asked her about it – she blocked me.
In the 2018 election, Malliotakis supported Steve Saperstein and said she needed Saperstein in Albany with her. Saperstein admitted to taking money from developers during the Xaverian debate. Malliotakis didn’t withdraw her support for him.
In 2017, the Conservative Party gave us the placeholder candidate election. And even doing that, they couldn’t win.
