Were You Rezoned from PS 102 to PS 746?

PS 746 is the new school that is being built at 278 – 59th Street (off 3rd Avenue) – See here.  They started building it in 2017 and it is set to open next September! (More info)  It will be an elementary school and middle school. The middle school will not be zoned – it has a performing arts focus and students will be selected by lottery.

The new school zone is marked in yellow below:

Councilman Brannan confirmed that children currently at PS 102 and the siblings of those students will not be affected. If parents want a younger sibling to attend 102, then they will be able to go to 102.

Parents who had their heart set on PS 102 and are being rezoned are upset. Some parents are concerned about the traffic and students walking across the avenues – See here.  That intersection will probably be assigned a crossing guard. A few parents have expressed concern about the air quality since the Gowanas highway is near the school. See here

The CEC Meeting on Wednesday, October 16th at McKinley at 7:00 pm will discuss the new school and rezoning. (CEC stands for Community Education Council)

In addition, parents have organized. You can be added to the petition by sending an e-mail with your name and address to: [email protected]

Those of you who have been rezoned….although the unknown makes people nervous, you should be thrilled if your child get the opportunity to go to the new school!  A fresh school building with new books, sports equipment and current materials.  A hand-picked staff excited to begin a new venture with an administrator is the best type of staff!   And there will be a new principal who will be engaging the parents and listening to your needs.  This new community for children is going to be a parent’s dream come true!! You may love PS 102, but PS 746 is going to be fantastic because so many people will be standing by to make sure that it is successful!
