Another Body Found in the Water

Early this morning, someone jumped from the Verrazzano Bridge.

The man who jumped yesterday’s body was recovered. I’m not sure this was another jumper as I didn’t see a story about this today. The current may have brought the body here.

RIP

What Senator Gounardes Forgot to Tell Us

This past month has been pretty awful for NYC.

Some leaders in this community sent mixed messages about the coronavirus. Maybe they really didn’t understand what was going on.

Below is a picture of Park Asia Restaurant located at 6521 8th Avenue. Across the street is the Dust Bowl, a park I played baseball in when I was kid.

Senator Gounardes shared the picture below on March 6th. It’s tagged #DineInChinaTown.  Through the windows, you can see the Dustbowl (which is really called Quaker Parrot Park).

At the end of January, Chinese New Year is celebrated.  Many people in the Asian Community did not go out this year for New Year’s because they were afraid of contracting the coronavirus. The Chinese New Year Parade on 8th Avenue had a much smaller crowd, as did the parade in Manhattan.  People walking around in Sunset Park were wearing masks at this time.

In the February 25th issue of the Home Reporter,  Jane Duong, Director of Outreach from Senator Gounardes’ office explained that  her friend didn’t want to go out to dinner with her in Chinatown because of the rumors she had heard about the virus.

Park Asia is a fantastic restaurant and is usually packed.  Sometimes when we have been there, the waiter or waitress will get someone else (usually the manager) to translate because we don’t speak Cantonese. Many of their patrons do.  This restaurant wasn’t visited because the community was scared, as they knew what the coronavirus did to their families in China.

A separate issue at the time (and still existing now)  is that some people blame Asians for the coronavirus and have been verbally and physically abusive to Asians.  NYC needs to better address racism and allow people to report it more easily. Many people don’t want to call the police, but phones and technology should allow for quick reporting. While it’s nice that politicians want to show concern, people want something to be done, so it doesn’t continue to happen.

Racism should not have been combined with the issue of a restaurant being empty because people feared getting the coronavirus.  It’s strange that NYC Politicians didn’t understand the fear. (See here)   In Sunset Park, the people didn’t need to be told to socially distance themselves because they knew it was necessary.

On March 7th, Brannan labeled the picture below with #SolidarityDimSum  Solidarity from the coronavirus?  This doesn’t make sense.

NYC was taken back by the coronavirus as leaders were focused on the wrong issue. By March 7th.  437 people in the United States had the coronavirus. No one in the US had died yet, but over 3,000 people had died in the world, mostly in China. (Source)  At that time, NYC students were still in school for another week.  The hashtag should have been: #Prepare4Pandemic

On February 27th, Gounardes was at a gala with the CAPC – Chinese-American Planning Council.  I find it hard to believe that they didn’t warn Senator Gounardes about the coronavirus.

Why about Oxiris Barbot, the NYC Health Commissioner? Did she speak with NYC council members and state leaders about preparing for the coronavirus? If so, why didn’t they take the time to educate the community?

Assemblywoman Frontus Has a Mask For You

Governor Cuomo made wearing a mask mandatory in NYS in places where social distancing is difficult, like in the grocery store.

If your NYS elected representative’s tweet didn’t look like Assemblywoman Mathylde Frontus’ tweet, get a new representative.

If you are in need of a mask, e-mail Assemblywoman Frontus at:  [email protected]. Make sure to give your name, phone number, address and how many masks are needed for your household.  (THAT IS SO NICE AND HELPFUL)

Assemblywoman Frontus has been working for weeks distributing food to people at their homes as well.

You probably haven’t heard about Mathylde Frontus’s work because she doesn’t overload our papers with press releases. (Thank God)

This is What Senator Gounardes is Tweeting

If something criminal is happening in Brooklyn, why is Senator Gounardes tweeting about it INSTEAD OF DOING SOMETHING TO STOP IT? See here

While Andrew Gounardes thinks it is harmless to write, “bodies piling up in basements.”  Those “bodies”  are people’s parents, grandparents and loved ones. This is just callous to write that. Leaders don’t talk like that.

If something unethical is happening in Brooklyn, then Senator Gounardes should be questioning the head of these businesses and doing something…..not tweeting. Tweeting doesn’t help anyone.

If people are being threatened with losing their job, why isn’t Gounardes stepping in? He’s an attorney so this one should be easy for him to handle.

On April 2nd, Simcha Eichenstein wrote to Cuomo about this (see here). Why didn’t Gounardes do anything then?  There’s a big difference between what the two politicians are posting. Eichenstein hails politicians who are actually doing things.

Who is Senator Gournardes helping by tweeting this?  No one.  I think he just does it to impress his friend, Justin Brannan. They retweet each other….and their staff retweets them (like Golden’s used to do).

Brooklyn Borough President Wears A Different Mask

Eric Adams, the Brooklyn Borough President finally got around to giving out masks in Brooklyn.

Even grocery stores and some restaurants on Grubhub in Brooklyn have been giving masks out.

Notice in the picture above that Eric Adams isn’t wearing the same mask he is giving out.

I believe that is a N95 as N95’s have the yellow straps on the side.

At an earlier time, Adams was seen with a surgical mask with a fabric mask, which is also recommended.  But Adams is only giving surgical masks to the people.

Eric Adams and Councilman Justin Brannan wrote an article about there not being enough PPE at hospitals. The two of them are  pointing the finger at the city (The Mayor?) and the state (again, no one stated). PPE = Personal Protective Equipment

WHY AREN’T THESE LEADERS GETTING THE PPE AND BRINGING IT TO THE HOSPITAL RATHER THAN WRITING PRESS RELEASES?   Brannan and Adams think it is time to get their name in the paper.  Hello politicians – there’s a pandemic going on!

Brannan knows the Mayor personally and doesn’t need to write articles or tweet. He could just speak to the mayor. This was just a puff politician piece

Asian organizations in our area have delivered supplies to the hospital – see there here and here.   If they read Brannan and Adams puff piece, they wouldn’t know where to deliver the PPE because the useless article doesn’t state that either.

While the coronavirus pandemic rages on, these pols thought they would fill the paper with nonsense. That’s why we don’t see important stories about heroes in Brooklyn!

Brannan must think the new normal involves more articles about him. HELLO there’s a crisis going on in NYC!
