Nabka Protest in Bay Ridge Today 5/16/26

Yesterday was Nabka 78.

Seventy-eight year ago – in 1948, 700,000 Palestinians left their homes (or were forced to leave their homes) during the war that happened when the State of Israel was created.

The word Nabka in Arabic means “catastrophe” or “great disaster.” Each year there is a protest on Nabka day.

Within Our Lifetime can march and chant in the streets of NYC, but ultimately the only way to get Palestine back (or a part of the area back) is for them to fight Israel and win. Israel has a strong defense because they spend $25 billion on it each year.

Today at 2:00 pm, people will be protesting in Bay Ridge starting on 72nd Street and 5th Avenue.

Their flyer translates to: “Neighborhoods remember, but the Nakba does not die.”

One organization wrote: “In honor of the 78+ year long struggle for liberation of the Palestinian people, Pal-Awda will be in the streets of Bay Ridge protesting in honor of the freedom fighters and martyrs of Gaza and all of Palestine.

Hopefully, it will be a peaceful protest. In 2024, it was not peaceful and 40 people were arrested – see here: https://www.instagram.com/p/C7IL5mnORZT

Expect: Traffic, bus delays and a large police presence in Bay Ridge. Also, there will Jewish people standing with the Palestinians:

Bay Ridge Battle of the Bartenders – June 2026

The 3rd Avenue Merchants will have the Battle of the Bartenders on Monday, June 22nd from 6:00 – 9:00 pm at the OLA Parking Lot on 3rd Avenue and 74th Street in Bay Ridge.

You can get tickets here $40:

https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/the-2026-battle-of-the-bartenders

The Merchants need to hire someone to manage their social media. They don’t share info/flyers well look how blurry this is it looks like 1990:

The 3rd Avenue Merchants need to let someone else run their FB account because that person is only allowing sharing on FB. Many people in Bay Ridge don’t use Facebook because they don’t like the drama.

Child Hit By Woman on Electric Bike. Hit and Run

Tonight, around 7:00 pm, a 10-year-old girl was hit by a woman riding an electric bike on the sidewalk outside of 1923 Bay Ridge Parkway in Bensonhurst.

A Brooklyn neighbor saw the woman stop and ask the girl if she was okay. But the woman drove off on her bike before the girl answered.

Thankfully, the girl is okay. She has a busted lip and scrapes on her arms. This time we were lucky. It’s our warning to get the bikes licensed.

Chris McCreight Needs a Headquarters to Be Silent in Bay Ridge

Bay Ridge don’t be fooled by Justin Brannan’s former chief-of-staff, Chris McCreight. He’s opening an office at 8011-3rd Avenue, where the tattoo parlor used to be.

When the casino came for Coney Island, what did Chris McCreight do? Nothing. During one meeting, McCreight was in the back text and laughing (it was very noticeable because Coney Island residents were fighting for their community).

For years, Chris McCreight stayed silent. He’s run for our NYS Assembly seat several times. He lost to Alec Brook-Krasny once. He backed out from another election.

315 Ovington Avenue – Taped Off with NYPD

This afternoon around 12:30 pm, a police officer taped off 315 Ovington Avenue and waited outside. This apartment building is across the street from the Brooklyn Firefly. See: https://shorturl.at/f5IIC

He was there for several hours (sometimes it takes awhile for the medical examiner to arrive).

That’s usually a sign that someone died and they are waiting for the medical examiner to pick up the body.
