Fire at Zano Express at 569 – 92nd Street: Next To The Gas Station

Citizen App
Zano Express is a small grocery store that opened next to the Sunoco gas station on 92nd Street in Bay Ridge.

Today, around 1:30 pm, there was a serious electrical fire at the store. We heard fire truck sirens for about a half an hour.

BOBBY ZAHN
There was a lot of smoke and the whole neighborhood smells like fire.

For years, this store was vacant and looked like this:

Google Maps
The fire fighters were on the roof of the building. Thankfully, they were able to put out the fire.
The FDNY closed 92nd Street.

May 9, 2026Ponzi Scheme Thieves Are Caught in Brooklyn. Senator Chan Helped The NYPD Get Them!

A Brooklyn resident contacted Senator Steve Chan because he was a victim of an online scam.
This Brooklyn resident invested over $400,000 in United States currency and Bitcoin in what he believed would be a lucrative online shop.
The Brooklyn resident desired to open a TikTok shop. He contacted an online business to set up the online shop for him. The company provided him a storefront online. When the Brooklynite tried to withdraw money from the store’s online account, he wasn’t able to. The thieves tried to convince him to send more money and Bitcoin.
That’s when the Brooklynite contacted Senator Chan for help.
Senator Chan, a former police officer listened to the Brooklynite and he helped coordinate with law enforcement and other offices a sting operation to apprehend the thieves!
The Brooklynite told the thieves that he had more money to invest and they could pick the money up at his home.

Three people showed up to collect the money at his home. Two of the thieves were arrested by the police. One person brought a baby with them and the police released that person pending further investigation. How awful that a parent would bring a child with them to rob someone!!
** I’m glad the Brooklynite got to see the thieves being arrested.**
Senator Chan shared this: “This case highlights the evolving tactics being used by perpetrators targeting hardworking New Yorkers,” said Stephen T. Chan. “I commend the outstanding work of the NYPD Financial Crimes Unit, the PBQN Grand Larceny Division, and the Kings County District Attorney’s Office for their swift coordination and professionalism. I also want to recognize the courage of the victim for coming forward and assisting law enforcement in preventing others from potentially becoming victims of similar scams.”
Senator Chan’s office encourages anyone who believes they may be the victim of a financial scam to contact the police.

May 8, 2026Asbestos Found at 2501 – 86th Street

Senator Steve Chan shared that asbestos has been found at 2501 – 86th Street. He wrote this:
“The recent discovery of asbestos at 2501 86th Street confirms what residents and our office have feared for quite some time — that serious safety concerns surrounding this project were not being properly addressed. It is extremely troubling that asbestos was apparently present while prior inspections failed to identify or properly investigate these hazardous conditions
The Sandhu Group skirted regulations and cut corners in an effort to fasttrack the construction of a homeless shelter that local residents, elected officials and community groups have opposed since 2023. The developer has now been directed to retain a certified asbestos abatement company to safely remove the hazardous material from the site.
While the remediation company has indicated that the cleanup process may take up to one year to complete, officials believe the work can and should be completed sooner.

Our community deserves accountability, transparency, and strict compliance with environmental and construction laws. My office will continue to closely monitor and challenge this process every step of the way to ensure the safety of our community.
As a NYPD veteran, protecting the public has always been my priority, and I will continue standing with the residents of Southern Brooklyn throughout this fight.”

May 8, 202613-Year-Old Pushed Off Electric Bike By a Man in Bay Ridge – 95th Street (Over Two Weeks Ago)

The Citizen App showed the information tonight.
But this happened over two weeks ago.
On Monday, April 20th, around 4:30 pm, a man pushed a 13-year-old boy off his electric bike outside of 9524 Fort Hamilton Parkway and Bay Ridge.
He didn’t steal the bike. He ran away after he pushed the child down.
Why did the man push the child on the electric bike? Something must have happened that made him act so irrationally.
The child was taken to the hospital for cuts. Today, the NYPD released the photo above.

May 7, 2026CB 10 Land Use Committee Voted for a Zoning Change for the Staples Lot 115 Ft Building

The Community Board 10 Land Use Committee voted to give the developers at the Staples Lot a zoning change to a R7A. A R7A allows them to build to 115 feet.
The developer seemed to control this meeting. He complained that CB 10 didn’t give Tim Ziss’ development such a hard time.

CB 10’s decision and how it played out tonight seemed rehearsed.
The developer seemed to have the upper-hand because he said if the rezoning was not approved, he would build condominiums instead of rental apartments.

At the May 18th Community Board meeting, the whole board will vote on this. I’ve been watching Community Board 10 for a long time, the vote almost always goes the same way as the committee voted.
This is what this development is charging for the 88 “affordable apartments.” The other apartments in this building will be higher so they can make up the cost.

Who decides who gets the apartments will be decided by an “independent” group. They are called the 5th Avenue Committee. – it was a group that Brad Lander was involved with years ago. Isn’t that interesting how they were chosen for this project?

May 7, 2026God Bless 94th Street. The Developer is Putting the Curb Cut on 94th Street – Instead of 5th Ave.

At the Community Board 10 Meeting tonight, the developer for the Staples Lot was so pleased to share that the existing curb cut on 5th Avenue (where you enter the Staples Parking Lot) will be closed up and people can park there. This:

If I lived on 94th Street off 5th Avenue, I would be very upset.

The developers are putting the curb cut on 94th Street so that people can enter the parking lot in the lower levels of the building.
It will be for the people who live there and the customers for the commercial stores.

Can you imagine what that is going to do to 94th Street?
The traffic that is going to hit that block is going to make people not want to live there.
The developer said the existing curb cut was 32 feet and the one they will put on 94th Street will be the same size.
