A Man Had a Heart Attack While Participating in Coney Island’s Polar Bear Plunge
A man participating in the Coney Island Polar Bear Plunge was pulled out of the water unconscious after he had a heart attack. Life guards tried giving him CPR. (Sad Photos on this page – scroll down)
The water was 49 degress. Hypothermia can set in at 60 to 70 degrees.

Many people love going to Coney Island on January 1st for the annual Polar Bear Plunge. This was the 119th year of the plunge. Last year was cancelled due to the pandemic.

A thousand people participated in the Polar Bear Plunge.
It’s free to take the plunge, but people are asked to make donations which will help local groups like: Coney Island USA, Coney Island Alliance, Coney Island History Project and YMCA.
