Mathylde Frontus Talked About Street Safety and Her Duty of Care Bill

Assemblymember Mathylde Frontus held a meeting about safety on Zoom tonight.

Frontus spoke about her Duty of Care Bill, which she has seen passed in other states. People have a Duty of Care to respond when they are involved in an accident. It’s a simple bill and shouldn’t be needed, but it is. A duty of care means that they call for help if someone is hurt.

Brooklynites spoke to Frontus about some hot spots in their area. Frontus said she that the streets in Bay Ridge have a different feel because of the speeding.

Maura spoke about the speeding in Bay Ridge.

Residents asked for a stop sign for some areas.

Electric scooters and electric bikes were spoke about as well. They don’t seem to have a responsibility or understand the rules of the road. Transalt was asked about that.

One of my favorite people in Bay Ridge spoke about 86th Street and 4th Avenue.

Then the meeting went down hill after that.

At one point, a man from the other side of the district recommended that every camera be made into a red light camera. He didn’t know that Councilman Brannan received 16 tickets from speed cameras, so we know the red light cameras are not effective. (See here) People who ignore the rules of the road don’t care how many tickets they get. **We need other ideas other than speed cameras, Bay Ridge. One man at the meeting wanted a red light every camera to be a red light camera!

The technology of red light cameras is not improving our streets – everyone can see that. We need new people who are willing to try new things now!

Ocean Parkway was also spoken about by several people.

One man spoke about people parking in bus stops and how this is very unsafe to let people out when someone is parked in the bus stop. At the end of September, Councilman Brannan got a ticket for his car being in a bus stop:
