Why Wasn’t This Street Renaming in Bay Ridge Shared in the News or On Social Media This Week, Like Other Street Renaming Ceremonies?

Usually a street renaming is a big deal. There is a news announcement and the councilman who applied for the street naming invites people to it the week before. (It normally looks like this or this)

Around 10:20 am today, Councilman Brannan mentioned this street renaming ceremony at 11:30 am – how strange. (See here)

The renaming of 89th Street and Ridge Blvd was for Arthur Schack, who died in 2016. Arthur Schack had a life where he was devoted to our community. He was a teacher, active with the boy scouts, involved with Community Board 10 and the Ragamuffin Parade. Above all this, Arthur Schack became a judge after being a teacher and showed compassion/fought for NY’ers who were forclosed on or faced evictions. The Huffington Post did good job at explaining Schack’s contribution to NYC. (See here) Someone should do a biography about him because he has an interesting life story and helped New Yorkers.

Arthur’s wife, Dilia is a Democratic District Leader in Assembly District 46. Dilia did not supported Peter Abbate over Justin Brannan for being the City Council Representative (See here) That explains why there was no article, announcement or flyer.

Nicholas shared a picture of the new sign here.
