Why Are Brannan and Gounardes Delayed on Responding to Hate Towards Groups of People?

Senator Gounardes said that something happened a week and a half ago at the location where he and Brannan gathered yesterday. The audio isn’t clear on the video. (See here)

Late yesterday, this graphic appeared on Facebook:

It’s good they are finally speaking out, but why did they wait so long?

Councilman Brannan could have put an article in the newspaper about this hate that residents, like Maureen and Vanessa experienced. Instead, Justin Brannan answered questions about himself, so he can get an article in The Brooklyn Paper today. His election isn’t until November, so there was no reason for him to do that now.

On Channel 1 News, the two women told their own story because neither politician did.

Maureen Ki was spit on outside of her senior center on 18th Avenue and 73rd Street.

In a separate incident, sixteen year old, Vanessa Lam was also spit on and then pushed into the street on 18th Avenue and 68th Street. Gounardes and Brannan should have shared this!

Why didn’t Councilman Brannan have this speak-out event on Saturday or Sunday so more people could be there for these women? Why did Gounardes and Brannan wait until late yesterday to tell the community about today’s event?

In the Summer, there was hate spoken in Bay Ridge. Brannan took over a week to respond to it. Gounardes never responded or commented on it. (See here)

The hate that people in our community are experiencing is awful, but it’s been allowed to go unchecked by politicians and the media for a long time.

In Bay Ridge, some families have been targets of hate at the playground this weekend!

Hugs,
marlene
