September 11th – Not Forgotten

A lot has changed in nineteen years.

I’m glad there are people who know it’s important to remember this day.

NYC was so patriotic after 9/11.  Even with loss all around us, there was such patriotism. And we were all together.

While there have always a few people who didn’t like the flag, this Summer, Bay Ridge saw a small group of people chant, “Death to America,”  as if the words didn’t mean anything. Did we forget that terrorism didn’t just materialize on September 11th?

While the pandemic keeps people socially apart, the country is more divided than ever. How did we get so far apart?  More importantly….what will it take to bring us back together?

The United States lost almost 3,000 people on 9/11/01. Back then we were stunned by that number and the people taken suddenly from our lives – it was the worst that we had seen.

This year, the pandemic has claimed the lives of 32,618 New Yorkers, 191,574 people in the United States and 905,181 worldwide. (Statistics here)

Both tragedies had numerous heroes, who put their lives on the line for strangers. Many essential workers lost their lives this year helping to keep this city running.

Today, we remember those who we lost on  9/11, as well as the heroes – 341 firefighters who died in 9/11.

We are so far apart now – not just because of social distance, but the divide in our country is painful. Hopefully by next 9/11, things will change for NYC and America.

Hugs,
marlene

A sad and scary day but somehow I find myself feeling even worse now. Maybe it is age, I don’t know. Does anyone else feel the same way?

I agree with you, it’s always a sad day…..but this year worse. I think there is just so much death and people are worried about the virus. Plus all the things people used to go out and enjoy are limited or have conditions for safety, so people feel that as well.

The city and subway were closed on Wednesday 9/12, but the next day we were on the train and back to work. Things went back to fairly normal for people who didn’t live or work downtown. Still, for about a month it was the first thing I would think of when I woke up — “did that really happen?”

Thankfully, my friend was late to work due to the trains. The second tower fell when she got to the street. She went back to the train station and they closed the station. She walked back to Brooklyn in heels. She didn’t want to lose her shoes, but they were destroyed from the walk.
