Ending a Friendship
Today I realized I hadn’t blogged about something that happened to me during the year. I ended a friendship with someone who I had been friends with for many years. It wasn’t something I ever thought would happen, but it was necessary.
How do you know when it’s time to end a friendship?
1. Your friend is lying to you. I don’t mean lying about little details, but about major things. Sometimes people lie because the truth isn’t what they want it to be. Sometimes people lie when you ask them a simple question. I had accidentally learned the truth several times. I had spoken to my friend about this and was told it wouldn’t happen anymore, but the lies were like an avalanche and continued.
2. Trust is broken. When you have a friend and the trust between you and the friend is broken, there isn’t a friendship there.
3. Other people become involved in your friendship. For me, I had a friend who had a baby and the baby’s father’s family was texting me and asking me personal questions. Not only was it strange, it was uncomfortable so I asked this person to stop writing to me. I have enough family contacting me, I don’t need someone’s crazy future in-laws contacting me. Even after I asked them to stop contacting me, they continued to do so. I had to change my phone number because although I blocked her number, she continued to contact me through texts.
Walking away is hard, but when your old friend changes into someone you no longer recognize, you know the friendship is over and it’s time to move on. When it first happened, I was very sad and I let me friend know. If that person was my friend (and she claimed Lee and I were her family) she would have reached out to me because no one would allow their friend to be feel that way.
It’s a year later and the decision I made to walk away from the friendship was the right one. Not dealing with the lies and someone who you don’t trust isn’t worth anything.God puts people in your life for a reason, and removes them from your life for a better reason.
Hugs,
marlene
