Well-loved, Di Fara Pizzeria at 1424 Avenue J in Midwood, Brooklyn has been closed and seized by the government. The state had everyone leave the building and they put the SEIZED sign on the door.
The news is reporting they owe over $160k in taxes since 2014. See here, here, here and here. (Saddest picture on that page)

This was a cash business so you would think they had enough money to keep the government away. They have a second location at 103 N 3rd Street in Williamsburg that is still open, if you need your pizza fix.
The owner’s daughter, Margaret Mieles, who runs the place told Channel 1 News that she believes the restaurant is being targeted. Mieles told Channel 1 News that they are on a payment plan with the state and since May, they haven’t missed a payment. Mieles said that the state just received a payment.
Seizing property is a last resort. The state will continue talks with the owner after taking the property to try and resolve the issue. So we may see De Fara’s opened again soon.
Update 8/21: Mayor de Blasio wants to save Di Fara Pizzeria. Cuomo came out against it because he didn’t think the pizzeria should avoid state tax.

Update: Di Fara Pizzeria reopened. They got the best free publicity and a lot of people who didn’t know about their pizzaria learned about it from all the news coverage.
