What the NYC Election of 2013 Taught Us
Congratulations to all the winners – I voted for every single one. I am thrilled that Gentile will continue as our Councilman.
The Election of 2013 was an interesting one. And of course there’s some lessons to be learned from this election.
#1 Integrity wins ALL THE TIME. Gentile has integrity and everyone knows it. He deserved this win!
#2 Teen girls take tons of selfies (pictures of themselves for those of you who are older than I am and don’t understand Generation Z). If you are a political candidate, we only need a couple of pictures of you because you are a politician, not a model. If you are losing your hair, it’s turning colors or you only have two pairs of shoes, a fresh picture is not needed everyday. If you are older than 25 – keep the pictures to a minimum. I think mayoral Candidate Joe Lhota said it best when he said he doesn’t take selfies.
#3 Use social media wisely. Complaining on twitter shows you handle problems by complaining.
#4 A lot of politicians lie to the public, but it’s worse when they lie to each other. We saw a lot of lies this season.
#5 If a political party endorses you, they will go out of their way to back you (as the Bay Ridge Democrats did for Gentile).
#6 Sometimes the best politics in Brooklyn happens in the local establishments. We stopped everywhere on Saturday night to take to people about this election. People aren’t excited to see you in the train station unless you have coffee or water,
#7 If your campaign manager rents a bus with your name on it, rethink your campaign.
#8 If your campaign makes a reggae song for you and you don’t normally sing reggae music. rethink your campaign.
#9 When you run for office against someone who has already won office several times, don’t talk about that person. Talk about what you can do for the people. Offer people hope as Bill de Blasio did.
#10 Don’t underestimate the power of a blog! People want to hear about other people’s experiences and frankly I am glad that John Quaglione was defeated by Gentile. Now he knows what it is like contacting him – a waste of time.
