I Support People’s Rights to Own Weapons

Yes I wrote that title.  And I stand by it.  Even in the wake of Sandy Hook, I don’t believe that a full ban on weapons is a solution.

The problem in Sandy Hook was caused by an individual with mental illness who had access to very powerful guns.

We have a constitutional right to own weapons. This right exists for a reason. Some people need weapons because they don’t feel safe in their home without one. Melinda Herman in Atlanta, George  needed a gun to protect herself and her children from an intruder. (Read more here) If Melinda Herman did not have access to a gun, she would be dead.

Many people want to make it more difficult for someone to get a gun.  People who legally try to obtain a gun may have a longer process, but that doesn’t stop those who want to purchase guns through other outlets.

Would a limit on the type of weapons that can be sold help? It may help limiting access to many people, but ultimately someone will find a dealer on eBay or somewhere else on the web to get the weapon they desire. And what about the weapons that are already out there on the street?

Ultimately, the real problem still remains – mental illness that isn’t being taken care of because many people don’t have access to medicine and professionals due to lack of insurance and money.

There has to be a middle ground and a solution on the guns issue somewhere .

Yup – deep thoughts before bed.

marlene
