Why Omar Vaid is Wrong for Bay Ridge……
Omar Vaid is running to be the Congressman for Bay Ridge and Staten Island. We never heard of him until this election. Although Vaid isn’t known here, Kadia Goba shared that Vaid is known on social media.
I wrote to him when I heard he was running for office:
See it on Twitter. Vaid didn’t respond. I have experienced this before with another political male from the area. I guess some mendon’t feel they need to respond to females on social media. If they aren’t speaking to us now – they shouldn’t be running.
I have also spoken to one of Omar’s staff members and supporters about this on Twitter, so if he missed my message, he would have responded then. (See below and here…..this guy says he will vote for him, but a quick search shows the guy lives in another section of Brooklyn)
Vaid hasn’t been present as a representative of this community. He deleted early messages on his Twitter account – which is a bad sign. He was actively tweeting in the Fall, but all have been removed. I wrote about his tweets in November. During the Fall elections, Vaid did not tweets about any Bay Ridge candidate.
Who is Omar Vaid?
- Omar lived in Bay Ridge for one year and then left (yes in 2008 he lived in Bay Ridge and left in 2009)
- Omar resides in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. What has he done in Williamsburg? Nothing.
- NYC ACRIS shows an Omar Valid with property in Williamsburg.
- His twitter account has followers, but few seem to know that he doesn’t live in the area that he wants to represent.
Essentially, Omar Vaid is “Pulling a Capano” on us. “Pulling a Capano” is a term coined by Bay Ridge residents. “Pulling a Capano” means a resident leaves a community, builds a life somewhere else and then has the realization that he wants to be a politician in the old nabe and get a government salary and pension. So he/she returns to the old community because he/she thinks no one is running there. The politician knows they don’t have a shot in their current community because there are viable politicians leading there.
Once in awhile, there is an area in Brooklyn that doesn’t have an interested candidate. For instance, Mark Treyger claimed Coney Island this way. Treyger was from an adjacent district. If you look at Coney Island now, you can see that’s something residents would not like to happen in their area.
Here’s the Problem with Omar Vaid “Pulling a Capano”……….There are many female, Muslim, Bay Ridge residents who are active here in the community. Each time women support these under-qualified male candidates (last election, they put forth a man who didn’t vote in the presidential primary for a candidate that he claimed to love), it stops female candidates from running. They are already standing up – we see these women are involved, teaching others and they have strategically campaigned for other candidates in the area. Yet, they are stalled from running because people keep pushing the men.
Eventually, we are going to get this right with the next generation who just want to represent everyone.
For now we need to get rid of the “wanna-be residents” who are looking for the salary and pension. The current salary for a member of Congress is $174,000.
Finally, Radio Free Bay Ridge is a site that I thought was going to be reputable for the election. One of the site owners works for Vaid’s election. She should recuse herself from election interviews as it isn’t fair to the candidates or the audience……even a disclaimer wouldn’t make it okay.
Hugs,
marlene
