How Can a Municipal Parking Lot Be Taken for Housing? Meeting on Tuesday November 18th

The Bensonhurst Municipal Parking Lot located at 1763 86th Street, next to the New Utrecht Library near 18th Avenue is going to be taken away due to affordable housing.

NYC announced in at the end of September that they were taking down the library and replacing it with a huge building with the library on the street level. The upper floors would have 100% affordable housing – see article:
How is it possible that it could be taken from a Brooklyn community?
Community Board 11 has done a bad job sharing this information.
The flyer for Tuesday Night’s meeting wants you to envision housing for the library. It doesn’t mention that the municipal parking lot will be taken away.

When this area is rebuilt, why wouldn’t a municipal lot be part of the new plan? It could be in the basement of the library.
The New Utrecht Library had a huge renovation recently – over twenty million dollars was spent on that building and it was closed for a long time. It doesn’t need to be renovated again.
A lot of people use that library and it shouldn’t be closed for over a year to do a housing project unless the NYC can provide a center for people to go to.
Why have politicians not shared this project with the community?
This parking area just had electric charging stations for cars added to it. Why would they have done that if they intended to rip up this area? It makes no sense. Info:
On Tuesday, November 18th join this meeting with NYC, as they convince you they can take municipal parking away from the community, rebuild the library and add affordable housing units above it. The meeting is from 5:30 – 7:30 pm on 11/18 at New Utrecht Library.

All the money spent on renovating the library, the entrance is not handicapped accessible. Which by law it should be. As a disabled Brooklynite this is a travesty of public funds and making it inaccessible for the disabled and families with strollers. I have to rely on the kindness of strangers who are always more than willing to help. But this should not be.
When I asked the branch manager she lied and said that it was in the works. That was 2 years ago.
