Mesa Charter High School 2 is Opening on 63rd Street in Borough Park, Brooklyn
Angel Guardian is on the corner still
A new charter high school called Mesa 2 High School is opening at 1222 – 63rd Street. It was announced at the District 20 Community Education Council Meeting this week. MESA stands for Math Engineering Science Academy.
This nine-story school will open in August 2025. While the school will be open to everyone by lottery, District 20 students will receive preference. How do you apply to this school? Go to their website (here) You have to apply by April 1, 2025.
The first year, the school will have a little over 125 students in the 9th grade. Every year, they will add another grade. The school is expected to have around 500 students in four years.
Mesa Charter School 1 is in Bushwich and it has a 94% graduation rate. Seventy-three percent of the students Mesa 1 graduate with at least three credits from AP Exams, CLEP tests, Kingsborough College or St. Francis College.
At Mesa 1, they had twelve AP classes. They also have remedial classes for students. Sixty percent of Mesa 1 students participated in an internship in a corporate setting before they graduated.
Ms. Anna Spoden is the principal of this MESA 2.
When the property was sold, Councilman Justin Brannan spoke about a charter school going on this property. Senator Andrew Gounardes failed to show up as the state representative for the landmarking meeting for this property. Instead, he sent Brannan to the meeting (there is a video recording of it).
Community Board 10 said they are not notified that this building was leased. Mesa 2 founding’s staff said they talked about the school with local politicians. Oops that person forgot to share the information with the community and particularly the people across the street from this school.
The people who live on this block must be overwhelmed with this news. The politicians did not share the information with the community.
This block will have three schools:
1) The WenJian Liu School of Civics and Entrepreneurship at 6312 – 13th Avenue
2) This Mesa 2 School will be at 1222 – 63rd Street
3) A Yeshiva on 11th Avenue and 63rd Street (the former Angel Guardian buildings location) (Info here)
Councilman Justin Brannan loves putting a lot of schools on one block! Last Spring, Brannan put a high school on a block with two other schools in Bay Ridge. Community Board 10 rejected the high school location and Brannan proceeded anyway. (Info)
PS 676 is an elementary on 14th Avenue and 63rd Street (See here)
Also there is also an existing middle school on 64th Street and 12th Avenue with almost 1000 students.
Hugs,
marlene
